Also, things like Jello can have triggers in them. Parmesan cheese is dairy and a trigger. I know she's gone through tons of tests but check here http://www.helpforibs.com/footer/ibs.asp for the full list of things she needs ruled out. Celiac (gluten intolerance) and fructose intolerance get overlooked a lot, and often misdiagnosed as IBS. There are lots of other things your mom can (and should) be eating, and some of things she is eating she shouldn't be. Take a look at soluble fiber supplement info here http://www.helpforibs.com/supplements/sol_fiber1.asp for how that can help her, and in that same section the info about peppermint for pain. Sounds like the drug she's been given may be an anti-spasmodic, which can help a bit with abdominal pain but won't do too much for diarrhea or constipation. Don't give up, and definitely give her a hug for us. There's lots to learn and many things she can do to get feeling better (and eat great food while she's doing that).
