I had a drink last night of beer and I'm now paying.
I'm usually okay with 1 drink, but last night I started getting AGONIZING abdominal pains. Worse than anything I've had before. I also felt nauseous and then started burping. I didn't know that much gas would fit in me! It got worse if I lay down, like the gas was trying to force it's way out of my tummy. Needless to say, I've had very little sleep and now feel like death. The pains aren't as frequent, but it's not good.
Weirdly, if I drink ANYTHING it gets worse, so I've only been able to sip at my tea. Any ideas for what to do? I'm shattered.

Just ride it out Linz! Go back to Breaking the Cycle for a couple days while your digestive system settles down.
Did you at least get to enjoy some of it? I miss drinking too sometimes.. especially when I'm the only one in my group of friends who can't touch the stuff!

Linz, I'm sorry to hear about how you're feeling! Beer has never settled well with me either, even pre-IBS. I agree, all you can really do is break the cycle for a few days. I hope your tea helps and you start feeling better soon!

Hope you start feeling better soon. Try to keep moving around so the gas will keep coming out instead of getting trapped, that will only make it worse!
Next time you HAVE to have a drink, try a small glass of wine. I can get away with the wine because there is far less carbonation than the beer. Two glasses over an evening once in a while is fine for me. Hope you enjoyed yourself last night at least!

Hi Linz - Hope you're feeling better soon.
Try some of the yoga poses for gas - check here web page
And if you have fennel tea on hand, just chew a small bit of the seeds (if you don't want to swallow them just spit out). That will get you the benefits without actually having to drink the tea.

Neither! For me, it's Jack Daniels! Yep -- it calms me, relaxes me, I forget I have IBS altogether, and I feel GOOOOOD.

I remember an old TV aerobics show that I used to LOVE -- one of the first -- Joanie Greggains! I taped it every day and I'd do the tapes a LOT. She was not only good, but she made me laugh. One thing she did was lie on the floor on her back, pull her knees up to her chest and wrap her arms around them, then roll back and forth (not sideways). She said, "This is what you do when you go to someone's house for dinner and end up with indigestion. They'll get the message!" Try it -- it WORKS!

I like Michele can have a glass of wine with out any bothersome. Have tried beer in the past but like you thought I'd die from all the gas. Not sure if it was the yeast or carbonation(if there is gas ) but man oh man... Did you drink this on an empty tummy? Hope you feel better!! Sue

Sadly alcohol has become a game of roulette for me. One night I can have a drink and I'm fine. Some other night I have a drink and I will wish I was dead for the following 48 hours. I'm just not touching the stuff ever again.

So sorry you had to go thru that. An attack that bad is one we can all relate to....
No fun when you can't be like all the other people, but WE can't. Can't eat like them, can't drink like them.
I've found when it is something I eat or drink and I start gettting those tell tail signs I've done something wrong, I start MOVING. It doesn't matter what it is.....dancing, walking, yoga, yard work, house cleaning......you name it. Getting into what you're doing gets your mind off of it and moves the gas out. At first it's hard to do when you're in agony but once you're into the activity it helps nulify the bad with some good. I don't think most of us can tolerate drinking ANYTHING with fizz and bubbles. Wonder how FLAT champagne will taste for New Years Eve ? Ug.....Tea anyone? Kandee

I'm the same way, I have to start moving around and cleaning the house or something so I can start to feel normal again. I hate it when I am away from home with the painful gas and I'm at someone's house. Every time I run to their bathroom to try to relieve the pressure I swear the gas does not want to leave my body until I am out of the bathroom again. Sometimes it helps to suddenly have to run out to the car for something just for a chance to move around and relieve the pressure away from other people! It's so embarrassing! A hot bath always helps but doesn't do me much good when I am at someone elses house

This rings SOOO true for me! But it also happens every single time I go to the doctor. I have "white coat syndrome." The minute I get in the waiting room, bingo bango, I gotta blow! It goes away the minute I leave his office. Now when I feel the gas coming on, I just keep repeating Michael's words, "There are no demands or insistance." If that doesn't help, I take the Equalactin that Heather sent me which I have in my purse for "emergencies." Bev.

Tell me about it. I've lost count of the times I've sat in the doctor's surgery, in a meeting, at a friend's house, on a bus/train, even in my meditation class (which is supposed to relax me!) - in fact, any time i'm in a room with other people for any length of time - going blue in the face trying to control the agonising gas.
The worst is when everyone knows you've already escaped to the bathroom twice, you come back and sit down just for it to start again....no more excuses. I can feel the anxiety rising just thinking about it.

Hi guys,
Thaks for all your input. Unfortunately I didn't get to read it on Friday as I ended up in hospital! My first IBS hospital visit. What fun...not! Needles all over me, the doctor prodding my tummy and asking which side hurts most!
The A/E staff were great actually - I got an anti-spasmodic injection to calm my tummy down which helped. Turned out it was colic. (How do babies survive this????). They let me go home after a few hours, but I ended up having a migraine that evening - predictable after a day with no food or drink! Anyway, feeling loads better now and am trying to stick to soluble fibre foods.
The doctors there actually managed to find out what's been wrong with me for, like, 2 months! I have an enlarged thyroid and a UTI. I'm so peeved at my GP - can't believe they didn't spot this!!! Getting meds on Monday, so hopfully then I will feel properly better!
Thanks again for all the great advice. I will certainly keep it in mind. Oh, and if any of you do drink beer, stay AWAY from stout (Guiness, real ale, etc.)! It ain't worth it.

How awful. Hope you're feeling much better now. Take it easy for a while, Linz.
Fortunately, I've not made it to A&E with IBS (yet) in recent years, but I do remember being rushed in a couple of times as a child with agonising pain - everyone thought it was appendicitis - turned out to be wind and colic, which was eventually relieved just by bending over! I think this was probably the start of my IBS, I just didn't know it until much later. Shellsbells

YOWZA, Linz! How HORRIBLE for you! What brought on the colic? Damn. The UTI -- do you get these very often? I get them all the time; they're really debilitating (and painful!). However, I can usually tell now when one is coming on, and I can sometimes flush it away with GALLONS of water. Prodium also helps; it alleviates the burning while I "flush it out" with the water. I can get the Prodium here in the States without a prescription, but not in Canada. I keep a supply in my purse (along with my supply of Equalactin) for such emergencies.
Hope you're on the mend, and let us know how those meds work for you tomorrow!
Bev.

Linz I'm so sorry you had to through all the pain. Hope you start feeling this week.
I know how a UTI is treated, but what did the doctor say about your enlarged thyroid? How is that treated?
