Luscious Eggnog Quick Bread

This is a wonderful holiday bread that is courtesy of Shell Marr (thanks Shell!) It's low fat, high soluble fiber, avoids all IBS dairy triggers, and is absolutely delicious. Bake several loaves and enjoy!

Makes one 9 x 5 inch loaf

4 egg whites, beaten lightly
1 cup Silk Nog (soy eggnog)
2 teaspoons rum flavored extract
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons Acacia Tummy Fiber (optional, but gives a moist rich texture)
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Preheat oven to 350F. Spray bottom only of a 9 x 5 inch loaf pan with cooking oil. In a medium bowl, blend together the egg whites, soy nog, rum extract, sugar, vanilla and applesauce.

In a large bowl, sift together the flour, Tummy Fiber, baking powder, salt and nutmeg. Add to wet ingredients to dry and stir just enough to moisten. Pour batter into prepared loaf pan.

Bake for 40 to 60 minutes, or until a tester inserted in the center comes out with moist crumbs. Cool on rack for 10 minutes, then remove bread from pan. Cool completely on wire rack, wrap tightly and store in refrigerator.

For an extra special touch, sprinkle bread with powdered sugar just before serving.

The perfect drink with this bread is a hot cup of Fennel Tummy Tea!

Hello Heather and other IBS friends,

I read this newsletter every month and whether or not you publish my letter is a-ok with me. I cannot tell you how much help finding your website, information and suggestions gave me hope when I first started having the IBS. I sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking time to share all you have learned and all your wonderful products.

I have to strongly, strongly recommend to other folks who deal with IBS the IBS Audio Program (Self Hypnosis). It is fantastic and has served me well for over a year now.

With the help of your site and the help of the audio program I am symptom-free now. It's truly a blessing.

For example: My IBS was so horrible that the summer of 2008 I cancelled my annual summer visit to my sister's in San Diego. And this is the highlight vacation of my entire year, each year.

I had read all the suggestions from Heather and read her books but what really saved my life, literally, was the IBS Audio Self Hypnosis Program.

I know stress triggers my symptoms because occasionally still I will get the gentle ache that is the signal that the unlivable symptoms may begin. I can immediately revert back to what I learned on the CDs and work through it in minutes!

This past summer of 2009 and on my other short trips, and also here at home, everything is wonderful. No more PAIN. No more cramping. No more eternal bathroom visits.

Thank you so much for being available, Heather, and offering life-changing help for those who suffer with IBS. All I need do now is use my Tummy Fiber Acacia daily and life is great again!

For those mulling over whether the hypnotherapy CDs are worth the cost, I wholeheartedly say YES! WELL WORTH IT!

I just wanted to add that I have seen many, many doctors prior to using the CDs and I mentioned your name and recommended your site to my Primary Care doc, my GE doc, and a therapist. The therapist was especially interested and wrote down the info.

I wish more professional health care workers knew about you.

Kindest regards,
Jean

Thank you so much, Jean! I am thrilled to hear that you are symptom-free! ~ Heather

divider Do I Have IBS? Can You Diagnose Me?

One of the most common letters I receive from people is a lengthy account of their medical history, their symptoms, and then the question: "Do I have IBS?"

The most important thing I can say to that is that I can't possibly provide the answer. You cannot self-diagnose Irritable Bowel Syndrome, nor can I diagnose you. While IBS can definitely be self-treated, you must see a doctor for a firm diagnosis first.

Why bother? Why not just look at your symptoms, see if they match the Rome Criteria for an IBS diagnosis, and then decide for yourself if IBS is what you've got?

You must bother - because there are numerous other disorders and diseases, some of them fatal, that can cause symptoms very similar to the symptoms of IBS. So, as unpleasant and frustrating as it can be, there is a process you need to follow to be sure you get the right diagnosis. Here we go:

What Symptoms and Diseases Need to Be Ruled Out For an IBS Diagnosis?

In essence, the diagnosis of IBS is a process of exclusion. There is no medical test available that will be positive for IBS; instead, your doctor will test you for all other illnesses that can mimic IBS symptoms, and if those tests are negative, and if your symptoms fit the Rome Guidelines for diagnosis, you'll then be diagnosed with IBS.

In particular, it's important that the following diseases are firmly excluded before you accept a diagnosis of IBS:

Colon and carcinoid cancer
Inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn's and Colitis)
Bowel obstructions
Diverticulosis / Diverticulitis
Gallstones
Food allergies and intolerances (fructose, lactose, etc.)
Celiac (a genetic, autoimmune disorder resulting in gluten intolerance)
Bacterial infections and small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)
Intestinal parasites
Endometriosis
Ovarian cancer

Once these possible problems have been ruled out, you can breathe a sigh of relief. And you can move on to:

Points to Remember About Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Its Symptoms

* IBS is a functional disorder - not a disease. The bowel simply doesn't work right.

* IBS can cause cramps, bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation - or all of these.

* IBS does not damage the bowel.

* Stress and diet can trigger symptoms, but the underlying pathology of IBS is caused by a brain-gut dysfunction.

Once you have your firm IBS diagnosis, take heart. While there is no cure yet, there are many ways to successfully manage - and prevent - all IBS symptoms.

Please believe me, I've been there - you can control your IBS, not vice versa!
