Hi - No such thing as an ignorant question! Taking a supplement is not a necessity, it's just a really great (easy, fast, effective) way to keep your GI system full of soluble fiber around the clock, which will give you stability. You can do this with soluble fiber foods, too, but sometimes it's nice to get the fiber without the food if you're not hungry.
Also, taking the supplement will help keep you stable when you're going to be eating something less than ideal (at a restaurant, say), when you're under extra stress or traveling, or when you've gone too long without eating. It's easy to keep the supplement on hand at home, in your purse or pocket, your car, your office at work, etc. That way you always have a safety net.
You might find that your need for the supplement varies. I actually don't use them myself everyday most of the time, but I always have a powder at home and some pills in my purse. If I start feeling touchy, am under stress, or whenever I travel, I immediately add in the supplements for a few days until I feel rock solid again. It's definitely more effective to use the supplements and foods both instead of just one or the other.
Best, Heather
