For me, the powders dissolved in water work best. Then the chewables. Last (but still better than nothing) is tablets that are swallowed whole.

Don't rule out other powders because of Metamucil. Most folks with IBS can't tolerate psyllium because of the bloating and gas it causes. But other powders are not made from psyllium, and can be MUCH more tolerable. It's also easier to get a lot higher dose of soluble fiber from powders than from pills. Acacia has 4.5 grams of soluble fiber per tablespoon, and Equalactin has .5 gram of soluble fiber per tablet. So you'd have to chew a lot of tablets to get the fiber you could get from just a glass or two of Acacia. That's why I actually like to combine the two. I use the powder Acacia at home every day, but keep Equalactin or other tablets in my purse to take at restaurants or when I'm out of the house and going too long without eating.
