Acupuncture is something that so many people have great results for with so many things...and then other people don't get the same results for the same things.

I think the acupuncturist you see makes a huge difference, and if someone has the time/money to try this route the best part is it can't hurt. At worst, acupuncture usually leaves people feeling very relaxed, which is a great thing for IBS.

I think this is an area of treatment that's hard to judge by clinical studies alone. There are just too many variations in how people react and how effective individual practitioners are. It's just not like a drug you can study where it doesn't matter who gives it or how. With acupuncture it's all about the doctors - they actually kind of are the treatment.

I'd hate to discourage someone from trying this route if they're interested. Insurance covers it for a lot of folks, and there just isn't any risk of side effects or bad results. Worse case is it won't help your IBS, best case is it just might.
