Hi - All oils are fats, and fats are oils. Same thing. For IBS, you need a low fat diet, but this does NOT mean fat free. It does mean that the fats you eat - about 20-25% of your total calorie intake every day - need to be heart healthy. Canola oil is a good choice, as is olive oil, finely ground nuts, fatty fish, and flax oil.
You can tolerate healthy fats if you eat them in smaller quantities with a high soluble fiber base. In other words, baking banana bread or making a fried rice with a bit of canola oil is just fine - deep frying something in it is not.
