Hi Barb - TVP and TSP are basically the same thing. They're both soy, and they're usually quite IBS safe as they're virtually fat free and have soluble fiber. If you're not used to soy at all, and are just starting to use it, increase your amount gradually. Don't suddenly start eating a whole meal of TVP, drinking soy milk, and using tofu all at once. The reason for this is that soy contains raffinose, a bean sugar, and if your GI tract is not used to this it needs a bit of time to adapt. Once you are used to soy it shouldn't cause problems at all.
For the refried beans, they will have both raffinose and insoluble fiber (in the skins). Both could cause problems. In general, refried beans are okay if they're well-pureed to minimize the insoluble fiber, and if they're combined with soluble fiber foods. But you should have them in small quantities.
If you just had TVP and beans, and no plain soluble fiber foundation (rice, flour tortillas, etc.) that may have been the culprit.
Hope you're feeling better soon.
Best, Heather
