Hi - the idea is to find a balance. Most people are trying to take a calcium supplement just to ensure they get enough calcium - but they have to do that without making constipation worse, which is why you add in the magnesium. For people who are diarrhea prone, they can often just take plain calcium supplements. If you're not trying to increase your calcium intake, then you can just use a magnesium supplement. But make sure you're using small doses no matter what, and take things gradually. I'm pretty sure there are some past threads on this with IBS-C folks giving the cal/mag ratio or just mag dosage that worked for them.
