Yes, if you're doing routines that are aerobic. That will burn calories (and also build muscle, which will raise your metabolism even when you're resting). I've never experienced a more grueling workout than some of my yoga classes - I've literally had sweat running down my arms and face and dripping onto the floor. This was in intermediate level classes, in any type of style that really gets you moving (hatha, vinyassa, ashtanga). On the other hand, there are classes that emphasize stretching and passive poses, and those don't work up a sweat at all so it's hard to see that you'd lose weight from that.

One tip...check out all the advanced students and teachers in a yoga class. They're always in incredible shape!

The publisher "Living Arts" makes a tape called Yoga Conditioning for Weight Loss.

Hey Jillie,

Here's my thoughts on this.... as Heather already stated, if you go to a vigorous yoga class (ie, an astanga, vinyasa, power class, etc) you will probably sweat a bit (or a lot) and get a good "workout" if that's what you are looking for. Personally, I can't think of anything better than a challenging (yet compassionate) yoga class that opens & strengthens my body, heart & mind but I am biased.

However, Yoga is not a quick fix and it is a practice that requires commitment and consistency. There are some yoga classes that will focus on stretching and relaxation and those are just as important... so long story short is.... find a class that you like, start to be aware of not only the yoga and your breathing etc, but also what you are putting in your body (something that ususally naturally occurs with a yoga practice over time) and I would say that you will probably start to see a difference in your body. Just watch out for that dairy!

let me know how it goes.

peace,
k
