Hey Andy,

Welcome to the Yoga board! So glad to hear that you are interested in learning a bit more about yoga. There are lots of places that you can buy/check out yoga DVD's. For instance by going to www.gaiam.com and clicking on their yoga DVD link, you will find lots to choose from. Also, Borders bookstores and even your local library (depending on where you live) might have some too. But having said that, the best way to learn yoga is to take a class with a certified teacher. The yoga DVD's will instruct you on many things but it can never take the place of a hands on class with a teacher. In a class, a teacher can find modifications to postures that will specifically work for your body and the experience is ultimately very different than just following along with a tape at home.

I know lots of folks who like the Rodney Yee and Patricia Walden tapes that are available from Gaiam. Suggesting tapes is tricky business because folks always have different taste and don't neccesarily like the same things. Either way... let me know which one you end up with and again, if you have the time and the desire try to check out a local yoga class to support your home practice. AND remember that not all teachers or styles of yoga are the same.... if you don't like your first experience, try, try again until you find the right fit. Hope this helps.

Peace,
K

Butting in here Yoga Teacher! I would love to find an "upbeat" DVD-kinda like "Inhale" on Oxygen. I love the music that he uses, I just get bored watching him all the time. Do you know of any that don't use meditation music to do poses by?

Hey Steph,

From what I understand about Steve Ross ( I don't get the Oxygen channel, but I have heard some things about him) the music that he plays on his show is a blend of upbeat stuff like old Motown and recent hits..... so here's the deal... you can either play your own music and do your practice on your own without a DVD if you feel comforatble enough with that... or you can buy a few great yoga CD's, some come with just music... some with music and VERBAL instruction, or you can try to find a DVD that is upbeat but here's the rub... eventually, you will probably get tired of watching & hearing the same one all the time anyway.

What style of yoga do you practice? That might help me be able to suggest a few for you. Do you go to any classes outside of your home.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Peace,
K

so you can watch the yoga video you want to practice to, but listen to the music that works for you. This only works once you're familiar enough with the video to know the sequence of poses, but that doesn't take long.

Also, the David Swenson tape I have doesn't have any music at all, so I can play that and a CD and hear his instructions as well as my own music.

I use Yoga For Dummies. It's excellent and so easy to learn. It's one of the best videos.

I read your reply post on Wed. (17th), and called around town and found a Yoga class for Thurs. (18th).
I went to the class on Thurs., and had a good time. They meet on Tuesday and Thursday nites at 6:30.
I signed up for 8 weeks of classes. The instructor thought a DVD by Patricia Walden would be a good
One to start with. I ordered Yoga for beginners II by Patricia Walden.
