Hello,

I just stumbled on this message board in my travels and I think it's a wonderful thing. I was diagnosed with IBS about 2 years ago. I started doing yoga every day about 1-1/2 years ago... I am now nearly symptom free. I have flare ups about twice a month or less. (before I was having attacks almost every day) The problems didn't stop until I started doing a stomach massage that I read about. I do it every day in addition to yoga and I don't seem to have the problems anymore.

The other thing that was a major change was that I quit smoking.

Anyway, this is a great idea for a message board! I love yoga... I'm now practicing Iyengar Yoga in a class each week and doing my own practice at home. Hope some of you have found the same relief I have doing yoga.

Peace,
Amy

There's a section of poses and pictures in the yoga section of this website but I don't have anything on stomach massage. I think others would love this!

Best,
Heather

I posted this at another great message board for women called herport.com (I have put up a link for your site there as well)

I got the idea for this massage technique from a book called "The Art of Sensual Massage". This particular massage in the book is called "draining the colon".

The general idea is that food matter gets caked to the walls of the intestines and causes some of the spastic cramping associated with IBS.

You need to lay down. I use lotion to help get a deeper massage. You "drain" the intestine and colon by pressing and stroking. Your hands should move in a circle and follow each other. Stroke with the palm of the right hand and press with the fingertips of the left hand. Your right hand should stay pressed firmly into your lower abdomen and make a smooth and slow circular motion. Then your left hand should work it's way around your right hand pressing and releasing (gently) into your gut. Basically you should try to work around your entire lower abdomen.

When you first do this you may feel that your gut area is kind of rigid in spots... that is what you are trying to massage out. If you feel a spot that is tight - rock back and forth on it a little and see if it will give way. Oh and since IBS is a stress related disorder, I tried to focus on relaxing as I do this... I use good smelling lotion and take my time. (about 5-10 minutes)

This is a pretty deep massage, but don't hurt yourself pressing too hard. It should not hurt at any time.

The pressure should be firm, even and not painful.

This worked wonders for me and I guess the other woman I told about it is having very good results... hope it helps others too!

I am a massage therapist and we learned to to something similar to that in class, I havent used it cause I was afraid that it would cause me to go more, cause we work in order of the descending colon, they told us this would help with constipation., I just assumed it would make you go more, do you do yours starting in the lower right working up then accross and then down the left, or just gemeral.
