Could someone please explain the difference between Hatha Yoga, which is talked about on this site, and Iyengar Yoga? There is a Yoga center near my home that teaches the Iyengar Yoga. Thanks

Hey Laurie,

Think of the term Hatha Yoga as an "umbrella term"...meaning that it is a blanket description of the physical styles of yoga that are practiced. So, that underneath the term HATHA yoga there are many, many specific traditions or styles of yoga...... Iyengar being one of them.

Below is a brief description of Iyengar yoga that I found for you:
Hope this helps.

What are the unique features of "Iyengar Yoga" ?

*
Iyengar yoga is meant for people of all ages, both the genders and cuts across geographical, lingual, social and economical barriers.
*
Importance given to the practice of  standing asanas.
*
The emphasis given to precision and alignment in all postures be it the standing, sitting, twisting, inverted, forward bending, backward bending or supine postures.
*
The aspect of "timing" where students are taught to stay for longer duration of time in each posture so as to experience it.
*
The use of props such as wooden gadgets, belts, ropes so that the practitioner can strive to achieve perfection in the posture; the practitioner can then learn to perform the posture with the same precision without the props.
*
The use of props to help the aged, the diseased and disabled to perform the classical postures and attain the benefits of the same – something they would never have been able to do so independently.
*
The aspect of "sequencing". An "Iyengar Yoga" practitioner is aware of the sequence in which different groups of asanas have to be performed; and how the effect of an asana would vary and be dependent upon the sequence in which the asanas are being performed.

Thank you for the information. Will this form of Yoga give help and relief for IBS-C or should I be looking at a different form of Yoga?

Hi - I think almost any form of yoga will help IBS, and certainly any form that's concentrating on physical postures as Iyengar is. Give it a try and let us know what you think.

I just started practicing yoga in the last month, and the class I went to was Iyengar Yoga. I appreciated the time that was taken to get the postures correct, and when I told the instructor that IBS brought me there, she spent extra time showing me postures that would be helpful (several that were also shown on this web site!). With other health issues besides IBS, progress is slow, but it's nice to have something physical to do when my energy is low.

Glad to hear that you are practicing yoga. That's great! Please let me know how it all unfolds for you and if you find any particular postures helpful for you. Take care.

Peace,
K
