Hello folks How are you all doin? I am fine. I have started doing Yoga some weeks back for my IBS-C. I do several breathing exercises -
1)Forceful inhalation and forceful exhalation
2)Normal inhalation but forceful exhalation
3)Alternate inhaling through one side nostril and exhaling through the other nostril
and other 3 more breathing techniques.

Every time I do, I start getting a cold and a runny nose. My nose (either right or left nostril gets blocked up). As a result I am unable to continue with these breathing exercises. I have contacted a Yoga teacher and he told me to slow down the speed of these exercises.

Are any of you folks having these probs? Pls reply , Appreciate your response.

thanks
Gary

Yeah, I'd cut back a bit...I just do the calming breath with my practice usually and that's fine.

You might actually have some sinus issues that the yoga is releasing! Maybe try taking a decongestant?

My yoga teacher had us do these exercises two weeks ago when I was having bad sinus problems. She suggested I go into prayer position and do them. Warning - make sure you have a lot of tissues near by!

It actually helped my sinuses a lot because I didn't feel like I was plugged up. My nose did run a little bit but I was thankful for the lack of stuffy head feeling.

I'd just follow your instructor's advice. Sorry I can't be of more help here...

It was embarrassing--and still embarrassing--everytime I go to a yoga class, I drip so much snot and plegm...it's like a horror movie. My eyes drip/tear, too. Basically, I just ooze. I figure I've got a lot of mucus that just wants to flow. It's rather disgusting, but my sinuses end up cleansed.
Basically, I just pack a lot of tissue and never borrow matts if it's at a public class.

I understand that traditionally, yoga practitioners use the neti pot prior to practicing; it serves to clear and clean out the sinuses.
You might try this and see if it's helpful.

Hello lady (as you have not posted your err first name:)) Yes neti pot is quite useful to clear out sinuses and then breathing exercises can be started.
I have not yet bought a Neti Pot although I have the Yoga guide book where the procedure is explained.
I am curious whether you have used Neti pot and the benefits thereafter achieved as breathing exercises becomes more better. Has yoga helped you with your IBS? To what extent if you may reply me, appreciate it.

Thanks
Gary

PS:neti pot is a brass or steel pot? i think with long nozzle.right?

Hello,
My yoga instructor told me that for the first few weeks of Yoga practice, your body goes through some sort of cleansing. It's apparently quite common for noses to run out of control for the first while. While I didn't experience what you are experiencing, I did have an increased stuffyness. It might subside on its own in time.
