Moderator: Is there a best time of day to practice yoga?

Elkind: Different times of the day affect you differently when you practice, but there is no one right time to practice. Some people connect with the morning, the freshness. The body may be a little stiffer then. So some people like to practice in the middle of the day when their body is open and they feel more alert and awake. If you're unable to practice during the day, the evenings are okay too. There are certain postures that are exhilarating to the system, like back bends, so it probably wouldn't be a good idea to do a lot of them, or head stands at night, it might keep you awake.

Yoga is the Sanskrit word for a wide range of self-transformative disciplines originating in India some 5,000 years ago. Even though it has been around for centuries, yoga is more popular than ever today because it's such an easy, relaxing form of aerobic exercise.

The word "yoga" literally means "union" and "discipline." This refers to its goal of uniting the mind and body through disciplined movements.

Take the path to mental relaxation and physical well-being
The practice of yoga has a substantial foundation in science. Its breathing exercises accelerate blood circulation, and its various postures strengthen the muscles, enhance flexibility and improve digestive, cardiovascular and nervous system functions.

Among the 12 basic yoga postures, you'll discover the Corpse Pose in which you'll be perfectly still, the Cobra, or Back Bend, the Sitting Twist and the Warrior pose.

The best time of day for yoga is the morning (before breakfast), when the mind is calm and fresh — and the movements can be done with vitality and ease.

And as yoga aficionados say, the two most important things you'll need to get started are a big heart and a small ego.
