Acacia Fiber Question

I am a long time vegan and realized I had ibs about 5 years ago. I quit eating fruit and the ibs went away. I had been doing well up until a couple months ago when a dentist gave me a strong antiobiotic. Now the symptoms are back again. I've been taking 1 acidophilis a day but it hasn't done the trick. My question is, since I already eat a diet high in soluble fiber (lots of whole grains, cooked vegies, no forbidden or low fiber items) is taking the acacia likely to make a difference and help bring me back to stasis?

It should help. I'd also try a different form of probiotic than the acidophilus and up your dose on that. It sounds like the antibiotics wiped out your good gut flora.

The Tummy Fiber is prebiotic, so it will encourage the growth of the healthy bacteria in your gut.

Sometimes people have trouble getting enough soluble fiber from foods alone, and have to add in a supplement.

Make sure you double check the safe foods list here soluble fiber because the whole grains and cooked veggies you mention might well be higher in insoluble fiber than soluble.

Best,
H

Thanks very much! Can you recommend a probiotic and dosage? I can't eat dairy so yogurt is out.

Hi - you can get soy yogurt with active cultures.

I've heard good things about Digestive Advantage IBS, Align, VSL #3, and the Jarrow brands. Just make sure the probiotic says that it is vegan or dairy free, so you know it's not cultured on dairy. The individual products will have the recommended dosages on them. In general, start at a lower dose and gradually increase.

Take the probiotics with food.

If you try one version for a few months and don't notice good changes, try a different brand. People seem to have different reactions and strong preferences with probiotics, so even if one doesn't do much for you another one just might.
