Does anyone know any recipes for fat free fortune cookies, fat free saltines, sourdough bread, plain bagels, plain english muffins, pumpernickel bagels? I can seem to find any here in Winnipeg, MB.
I'd also like to say thank you so much Heather for writing your books about IBS. I appreciate so much. I can't thank you enough. I had IBS since I was 17. I'm 19 now and will soon be 20. I have very severe IBS. I'm still trying to get it under control.
My doctor said I had an ulcer but he was wrong. I'm in agony everyday. He thinks it's all in my head. He thinks IBS is a joke. I'd like to kill him. I went to a specialist last year and he told me I don't have IBS. I finally went to another doctor and he said I have IBS or Crohns Disease. I went through all the tests and found out I have IBS. He gave me Dicetel and that's it!!!! He didn't tell me about peppermint tea, soluble fiber, etc.

I am drinking peppermint everyday, swallowing altoids, eating the right foods but I'm still in agony. I can't work yet. I get severe constipation. I can't socialize. I don't know what else to do. I have to have a heating pad on my stomache each day and I
take Dicetel everyday but I still have severe IBS. I am so bloated and have so much gas and gas pain and cramps. I can hardly wake up in the morning. I only like to sleep since I can't feel the horrible pain when I'm sleeping. I hate everyday.

I'm sorry I don't have any recipes for the items you listed, but I just purchase the saltines, bagels, and sourdough bread from the store. Just make sure there are no milk products, eggs, or whole wheat ingredients in them. I seem to do fine with them. I hope this helps and I understand what you're going through. Keep up the tea and heating pad. Try drinking water (I know---very hard) at room temperature, because it does help with the constipation. Hope you begin feeling better soon!

Angel,I have just had 2 weeks of pain also and finally what worked for me ,were digestive enzymes.I can finally eat again and follow Heather's IBS diet. Also sometimes warm water with some lemon juice helps. Good luck

Angel - Gee, You have better days ahead. I'll look up in my recipe books for the items you mentioned, but I'll probably have to make adjustments. Give me a day or two. Won't be home much of tomorrow (Wed). Hope you feel better. It's crappy feeling crappy!

Angel - here are a couple of recipes--one for pumpernickel bread and plain bagels. Let me know how they turn out. I've made the pumpernickel before and I love it. I've never made the bagels. Good Luck.

Pumpernickel for Bread Machine

Large Loaf
1-1/4 c warm water
1-1/2 c white bread flour (Better For Bread)
½ c wheat bread flour
1 c rye flour
2 tbsp sugar
1-1/2 tsp salt
2 tbsp butter (or dilute the Butter Buds in hot water)
¼ c cornmeal
2-1/2 tbsp cocoa powder
3-1/2 tbsp molasses
2-1/2 tsp fast rise yeast
O R
3-1/4 tsp active dry yeast

The recipe calls for ½ tsp instant coffee which probably can be omitted and 1-1/2 tsp dry milk, which also can be omitted. And, caraway seeds, which I always leave out—don't like 'em.

Bake only on regular cycle. You need the double knead. This is a heavy, dark bread, and the loaf will be short and stout and dense. If your machine doesn't have a second knead, after the first one, just start the machine over.

Plain Bagels for Bread Machine

1-1/8 c warm water
3 c white bread flour
3-1/3 tbsp brown sugar
1 tsp salt
2-1/2 tsp fast rise yeast
O R
3-1/4 tsp active dry

Remove dough from machine after the first knead. Place dough on floured surface. Divide into 8 parts. Form balls, gently press center of ball and slowly stretch into bagel shape. While bagels rise, bring 3 qts water and 1 tbsp sugar to a rapid boil in a large sauce pan. Drop test dough in boiling water. It should pop to the top right away. When this happens, it's time to boil the bagels. Boil on each side for 1.5 min. Remove and cool on rack 1 min, brush with egg wash or spray with Pam. Bake at 400 on a baking sheet sprinkled w/cornmeal until golden. About 15 min.

To make bagel sticks, cut bagel before rising and lay out in a straight line. Let sticks rise and bake as described above.

I have pumpkin spice, cranberry orange, garlic, cinnamon raisin and onion bagel recipes if anyone wants them.

I know the cramping pain you feel as well, I have also been tested for ulcers among other things! It really helps to talk to people who understand and are going through the same pain.
I find metamucil helps me, because you get the water at the same time as the fibre...I drink it first thing in the morning before anything else. It sometimes helps to relieve pain after all day, also peppermint tea and brewing fennel seeds in hot water also relieves pain. Stress is one of the worst triggers of my pain and I find relaxing and especially exercising keeps your mood up and the pain away. Hope you will feel better soon, it takes time!

Things will get better, though I know it's really hard to believe that when you're in so much pain. I'm sorry your docs haven't been more helpful. I'd make sure they have checked you for inflammatory bowel diseases and celiac - those are overlooked sometimes.

You don't have to make the fortune cookies, bagels, soda crackers, etc. The ones you can buy should be okay - just check the ingredients. Anything that has less than 20% of the total calories from fat, and has no dairy, should be good. Just get plain white bread of any kind if that's all you can find, or make some plain white rice or plain pasta.

Definitely start taking a soluble fiber supplement (in Canada, look at health food store for something called Fiberrific). If you can't find that locally, you can order Equalactin from hardtofindbrands.com. Both of these fibers are a safer bet than Metamucil or psyllium, which can cause bloating. Drink lots of water, too.

Try fennel tea as well as peppermint - it's great for bloating. And even though it's hard, try to be gently active somehow. Just stretch out on the floor, do a gentle yoga routine to a videotape, walk up and down some stairs slowly, if you can go for a walk around the block. You need the activity to get the muscles in your colon back on track and to help the constipation.

The good news is that once you are stable (and you honestly should stabilize if you follow the breaking the cycle info) it is much easier to stay that way. Please hang in there - we're all thinking of you.

I was taking metamucil but big mistake. It gave so much gas and gas cramps and gas pain. I drink lots of strong peppermint tea through out the day. It helps but I still have so much gas. It's awful. I know about stress. Gosh, it's horrible. I do my best to relax.

The doctor has checked me for IBD and Celiac Disease and I don't have those. I am gently active each day. It's hard though. How exactly do you find out 20% of the total calories from fat? I can't find any fat free fortune cookies at gorcery stores or fat free saltines. There are saltines but not fat free. The bagels have egg and dairy and english muffins have the same. The arrowroot cookies have dairy in them too. Kix cereal corn chex, and rice chex is not sold here either. Gosh it's hard to find certain food items here. Now I know people with IBS are suppose to have only 25% fat max. each day, how do you figure that out exactly? How many fat grams are you suppose to have? Thank you for the link.

Sorry, I forgot to post that I don't have a bread machine. I can't buy one either since I'm on a very tight budget. I can only make food by hand. Sorry about that.

Well, I'm not sure about Canadian food labels, but ingredient labels in the US actually give the percentage of calories (per serving) that comes from fat. If your labels don't do this, you might have to do some math in your head. Each gram of fat has 9 calories. So take the number of fat grams times 9 and there are your fat calories. See what percentage this is of the total calories in a serving. You want that percentage to be under 25% (and if you're really in a cycle of attacks, I'd keep things under 20% till you stabilize).

It sounds like you might have to stick to oatmeal, cream of rice, plain white bread, potatoes, rice, and pasta. If the commercial bagels, fortune cookies, soda crackers, etc. all have egg yolks or dairy it's best to avoid them.

I do drink lots of water. At least 8 cups or more. It's hard since I'm always so full because of all this gas. I can hardly eat since I'm so full and bloated. Thanks very much.

I had all the bloating and gas, I really think that the Zelnorm my doctor gave me helped with that part of my IBS problem. See if you can get them to give this to you.

Hi Angel,
I am knew to this. My doctor tested me for Celiac Disease a year ago and the blood test and biopsy came back negative. However, I was not able to eat anything with glueten for about two weeks. I discovered Celiac.com, which has a lot of great receipes with little fat and sugar. Another way to find recipes is to check Google.com. It is a search engine and type in fat free recipes. Another site to check is my-meals.com. It is a long list of fat free recipes.

im glad im not the only one who has horable gas..i would rather have just about anything else then gas.i get it up threw my thoart and it gets wrose when im in public and cant let it out,or i have an aniext attack,sometimes it gets trapped in there,and that is very painful.my stomach sweels up like im 6 months pregnet,and ill be passing gas excessivly for an hour staright.the gas never stops its a nightmare.anyone got any suggestions?

Fennel tea is amazing for gas! And taking a SFS regularly will also help, as will cutting out all the triggers and being extra careful with veggies - especially the gassy ones like onion, broccoli, etc.

I'm have just recently developed IBS and am from Winnipeg too. I do most of my shopping at Superstore where there are MANY IBS safe options. The arrowroot animal crackers are low in fat and contain no eggs or dairy. Gunn's Bakery "water bagels" are also virtually fat free and contain no eggs or dairy. Try looking at Organza or Organic planet for other items which are usually vegan.

i tryed drinking fennel tea and it seems like its producing more gas..what is SFS??i ate spanich with my lasanga last night that might explain some of it.am i the only one who gets horable gas like this?

Hey Till!you sound alot like me right now,i went threw all that testing and they dignosed me with ibs,and put me on prolsec otc,and recommened yoga,then a few months after testing i got horable gas and it went all to hell from there..i started devolping breathing problems,aniexty,horable panic attacks,along with constaptian,stabbing stomach pains,depression,and the feeling like i was full..my doctor told me it was all in my head to and put me on different kinds of depression medicane,i refused to belive that.the gas couldnt be forming on its own,come on now..anywayz i sit at home everyday doing the same thing waiting for the day and night to end so i can sleep away my pain.i dont have any friends its to embrassing to let gas out and when it gets stuck it gets painful and all my problems come back.hope to talk with you soon!
ps.im thankful that heather wrote her books and made this website i have no idea what i would do without her help,and the support of others on here.thanks.

SFS = soluble fiber supplement (Linz made up a great post of commons if you need to look it up: web page)

Did you eat regular lasagna with dairy, or was it ibs safe? If you haven't cut dairy out, that may be your gas culprit. I have horrible gas if I have anything with dairy in it.
