Does anybody have any quick ideas for jazzing up a bowl of rice?

Hi, Try a little teriakyi or soy sauce. You probably are looking something more "exotic", but that's all that comes to mind right away!

Hi - I LOVE something called Bragg's liquid aminos. It's sort of like soy sauce but much better. It's at health food stores and some regular grocery stores. It's delicious over rice with a tiny drizzle of flax oil. I also like to sprinkle on lecithin granules - sounds weird, but it's really delicious. Even better is to microwave a sweet potato and mash it with a fork over the rice, then add the Bragg's and flax oil (and maybe a bit of brown sugar) to the mix.
If you like Asian food you can get seaweed/sesame sprinkles called furikaki - lots of different varieties available. That plus a bit of soy sauce is yummy.

I had a list of 50 suggestions sitting in a recipe file. I haven't tried any of them, and about half were hardly suitable for anyone with IBS. Here's a modified list:
To hot cooked rice, add: 1. lime juice and chopped cilantro 2. sauteed wild mushrooms, thawed frozen petite peas (canned might be softer), and soy Parmesan cheese 3. diced tomatoes and basil pesto 4. red beans, low-fat coconut milk, and chopped cilantro 5. grilled chicken strips cut into bite-size pieces, chopped sun-dried tomatoes, basil pesto, and balsamic vinaigrette 6. chopped roasted chicken, sliced green onions, and orange marmalade 7. black beans, salsa, soy sour cream, and chopped cilantro 8. kidney beans, caramelized onions, and soy sour cream 9. sauteed mushrooms and chopped, steamed asparagus 10. chopped roasted chicken and chopped chives 11. thawed frozen peas (canned might be softer) and finely chopped fresh mint 12. lemon zest and fresh lemon juice 13. sauteed minced garlic and mushrooms 14. navel orange slices, chopped red onions or chives, and vinaigrette dressing 15. vanilla soy ice cream and a dash of cinnamon 16. scrambled egg whites, crumbled vegetarian sausage, soy cream cheese cubes, and sliced green onions 17. soy yogurt and finely chopped fresh fruit 18. sauteed zucchini and carrot "matchsticks" and soy Parmesan cheese 19. soy milk, sugar, and vanilla 20. black beans, minced red onion, chopped cilantro, and vinaigrette 21. finely diced carrots, thawed frozen peas (canned might be softer), scrambled egg whites, grated ginger root, and soy sauce 22. chopped rotisserie chicken and sun-dried tomato pesto 23. grilled shrimp, lime juice, and fresh pico de gallo -–adapted from http://www.ricecafe.com/

I really like the above suggestions, Tess has a few I might try...I thought I'd just add my version to the list. If you're looking for something fast and really yummy (depending on how much sodium you can take), I use Maggi, which is a sauce alot like Soy Sauce made by Nestle. It's used to flavor alot of Asian dishes.... it can be used in place of salt most of the time. But whenever I have leftover rice I just pour some Maggi over it and its ready to go...My boyfriend loves it over scrambled eggs, and on his sandwiches...The list of uses is endless.

In a deep, non stick skillet, add 1 tsp oil (Seriously, you don't need more than that!) Add finely chopped onion (I use about 1/4 cup) Add cooked rice (break it up with your fingers) Add cooked peas and carrots (if you can tolerate) Shake a bit of garlic powder on Shake a bit of soy sauce on The secret is that the brown colour comes from the soy sauce, not the browning in the skillet. PS add anything else you want! but I find this is a nice, lightly flavoured dish. I think the secret to "fried" rice is keep it mild.

Sek - first of all, don't use plain water. Use fat free chicken, beef or vegetable broth instead. It gives it a good flavor. I cook my rice with broth most of the time. It also gives the food it's served with good flavor.
Why not use Rice-A-Roni too. Make both and mix them together for a different rice dish. I always have a container of cooked rice in the fridge in case I need it, if you know what I mean! I like to snack on it too. One half cup is only 2 points for Wt Watchers.
Also, brown rice is good and nutty flavored. It takes a bit longer to cook, but it's worth it. I make all my rice in the microwave. It saves a pot, but you have to be careful not to cover it all the way because it'll boil over. I always put a paper towel under the dish and leave the lid ajar or the plastic wrap open on one end.
Try butter buds or spray butter on it with a little s&p, or maybe garlic or onion powder, or fresh chives. Or maybe saute some onions until they're soft (if you can tolerate them) and mix them in.
What about rice desserts with soy, rice or almond vanilla milks? I haven't tried any yet, but I'm giving myself some good ideas!!!
If I think of any other ways to fix rice, I'll post back. Sharon

I get Maggi Sauce at the regular grocery store. It's made by Nestle. Use this to find a store near you that sells it: web page .
Safe for ulcers? Don't know about that. Sorry.

Spice Islands "Fines Herbes." Incredible stuff. I add fines herbes, garlic powder, pepper, and soy butter to the water so that the rice absorbs the flavor. Be generous with the fines herbes! YUM.

Hey, Peaches, this sounds like a great idea! Do you boil the rice in it? Then I suppose you don't season the rice with anything, right? Oooh, this is sounding really yummy.

You jsut make your normal rice as usual, then pour it on and mix it together. I used to use butter as well when I was little, but think it started tasting nasty when I got a little older lol. But that's all you do! It's delicioso!

A couple years late on this one, but I'm a new member as of today so...
I do boil the rice in pineapple juice. Actually, I was dx'd with IBS on Friday after thinking for about ten years or so that it was just something that I took after my dad in, but during a routine check-up for my fibromyalgia, the doc asked me about it and yep, there I was.
I used to use Minute Rice and would make it with the pineapple juice replacing the water entirely. This works especially well when I paired it with poached chicken that had pineapple juice added to the chicken broth as well - then add steamed carrots, warm pineapple chunks, some steamed celery, and herbs to taste. Sort of my version of a Hawaiian meal. Now I'm just poking around to see if Minute Rice is okay for the IBS diet. My almost-5 year old is on a high-fber diet for her own GI issues, but it's mostly been insoluble fiber. Now I'm trying to reconfigure our household diets AGAIN. <sigh> Fortunately, it won't take as much this time as before, since we did the switch to soy milk and similar stuff about 9 months ago.

Last night I came up with this quick recipe to put over my Jasmine rice. I LOVE this rice, it has a wonderful "nutty" flavor and the aroma, while it's cooking, is incredible!
1 small onion, chopped 1 TBSP olive oil ( you can use a spray to coat your pan,if you prefer. A small amount of Olive Oil does not bother me) 1 can (14 1/2 oz) of Del Monte's diced tomatoes with basil, garic & oregano... (GREAT taste!) 1 can (8 oz) Hunt's tomato sauce with roasted garlic flavor 1 small baking (Russet) potato, peeled & grated
Saute chopped onion in the olive oil until soft & transparent. Add the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce and the grated potato. The grated potato thickens the sauce a bit. Simmer, covered, for about 15 minutes or until the potato is cooked. Even though the cans of diced tomatoes and tomato sauce both have garlic flavor in them, it is NOT overpowewring at all...its a wonderful flavor. I poured some of this over my Jasmine rice and it was VERY tasty!
You can add what ever you like to this basic sauce: grated carrots, sliced mushrooms, thinly chopped celery, etc.

I just put in whatever leftover rice I have. Not very scientific, I suppose. Maybe 2 cups for the amount of onion given? If it looks like a lot of rice, I use more onion. It always seems to turn out yummy!

Thanks for the reply. I tried this & it didn't seem to sit well in my stomach. I'm not sure why? It all seems fairly safe. I guess I will wait a while & try again.

I have a quick and easy rice pudding. Just take your rice add about 2/3 cup soy milk to a cup of rice, put in about 1/4 cup golden raisins, 1/2-1 teaspoon of vanilla, 1 tspn of olive oil and a little brown sugar. It's really good for a snack or breakfast.
