This sounds excellent..but are we allowed to have tomato soup because I have been steering clear of it for months.

I hope we can.

Well, I know somewhere in Heather's book it says tomato & rice soup is ok and we eat spaghetti sauce and ketchup... I would think it was ok.

Tomato soup did bother me unfortunately. We are all different, as we know, so you'll just have to test it for yourself. I miss it too!

For some people anything acidic can cause tummy problems.
As long as I take my Nexium everyday I can eat tomatoes.
Enjoy some tomato soup and hope it doesn't bother you.

Luckily tomato soup doesn't bother me. I've been having it recently with some grilled soy cheese sandwiches. It is so yummy!!!

Hi Barb,
I was wondering the same thing cause of GERDS. I don't eat much tomato sauce . Love it but it often does cause me problems. Maybe it's the spices??? But, tomato soup is not as concentrated as pasta sauce & I know I've seen the use of barbecue sauce on here. I do eat a bit of tomato on a sand. Gonna try it!

Did they tell you what to avoid for GERDS?????

All I've ever known is peppermint!

Tomatoes, especially cooked, are acidic. All acidic foods can trigger GERD. In some folks they can also trigger IBS. So along with tomatoes you might want to watch out for citrus fruits and vinegar.

Raw tomatoes are more tolerable. Cooked tomatoes in small amounts, along with soluble fiber (and little to no fat) can be more tolerable than large amounts. But, for some people, they're just not a do-able veggie at all.

Try a small amount and see how you do.

Oh wow.. I had thought that cooked tomatoes were better than raw tomatoes. This explains why I never feel well after eating spaghetti!

was gonna put -nt-, but.......stay away fr. acidic like citrus......real bad too, think Heather said that. I also have to stay away from spicy or hot things.

Chocolate can be real bad too.....I do pretty well w/it tho if....... IBS is going well. But, a little goes a longgggg way!

Think I just posted this info .......thot it was to you but might have been to Barbara. I was also asking what she or you stayed away fr. w/Gerds?????

Makes it doubly hard, doesn't it..........!

Hi Marine,
Foods to avoid with GERDS are peppermint, chocolate, coffee, dairy, high fat foods, acidic foods; such as, tomatoes, pineapple, orange juice. Broccoli and cauliflower can also trigger acid reflux.

Also I don't eat any foods that can be a trigger for me much past 1:00pm, because I need enough time for my food to digest so I can sleep at night.

I do take Nexium everyday and without the meds. I wouldn't beable to eat at all. A piece of white bread use to give me heartburn. With meds I can eat small amounts of tomatoes, but I still don't eat anything else acidic.

Last year I ate fresh pineapple and it felt like someone set my stomach on fire. You need to eat very carefully and it will take you time to figure out which foods to avoid. In the end I promise you - you will feel better.

http://www.webgerd.com/SelfHelp.htm#0 Check this website out and you find some more info. about lifestyle changes.

Marine which medicines do you currently take? What tests were done to dx. you with GERD?

Hi Barb,

Yes, I'm right there w/you on what I eat. I was diagnosed w/GERDS in 99 when upon waking up had acid coming up. Didn't even need to have food!!!!!!

GI did an endoscopy then to diagnose Gerds. I've been on Prevacid ever since and it seems to virtually make it disappear. Unless I eat the stuff you mentioned, plus hot or spicy things!!!!!! Thank heavens for these drugs. Pepcid did no good.

As of a couple das ago I'm back on Librax 3xda. I was on it for yearssssssssss for IBS. Had trouble this summer & reg doc wouldn't renew presc. Just said see a GI. I am going to try to c & P ans. I sent to Heather for the board abt. this and more. Hope I can do it.If you don't see it there soon, figure I wasn't able to do it. Not very computer literate. It was in answer to her response to my Flaxseed, VitE, Cantalope mess. No.......think it was in ans. to WHY COULDN'T I LOG IN.

I also take Inderal LA and Diovan HCT for BP. Sometimes Zyrtec & use Nazonex for allergies........but haven't had to much lately.

Thanks for the webpg. you send. Always looking for info. Am sooooooooo glad I found Heather's site.

I love chocolate so and do get away w/a bit of it when IBS is not bothering me.....!

Love pineapple too.......but don't dare touch it anymore. The very worst one is grapefruit which I hate anyway, but miss orange ju. and HAVING LEMON IN ICED TEA>>>>>>>>>which is the only thing I drink, cept for hot tea and now that I've found rice milk. I just love it... NICE CHANGE!

Anything else you have found to drink????????

I stay fr. fruit drinks cause can't take the fructose apparently.

What a boat we are in, right!!!!???????

oh well,

Tks,

Marnie

This sounds really good! Suggestion for ones that suffer from the acidity in tomatoes; how about if you add a bit of white sugar for the acidity. I know if I put a bit of sugar in my tomato juice I can drink it. Something about the sugar and acid balancing out.(?) try it. Sue
