I have this shake every morning for b'fast around 8-8:30 or so. By eating the liquid meal, it seems to help my digestion as well as kick-start my metabolism. I feel better and eat better if I have some sort of nutritional meal in my tummy as opposed to skipping b'fast. It does not seem to bother my tummy, but we are all different. I usually follow this up with a 10 a.m. snack of all carbs (french bread slice or 2c Crispix)

1 scoop GNC soy based protein powder (or any other fave kind)
1T hershey's cocoa powder
1T soy milk powder
2t sugar
8oz water and about six ice cubes

Blend together. Good stuff.

I've been really dizzy in my weight class and the instructor suggested that I eat something an hour before but does not think that a Luna bar is enough....

SO........

Do you know how well they stay set up and cold? Do you think I could make it at 6AM and keeping it in a thermos that is stored in the refrigerator at work until 5PM for the drive home before I go to my weight class at the gym at 6:30PM? Any tips on this?

What if you brought the powder mixture and add the water when your ready? Would that work or is getting cold water difficult? I've never tried this but it was just something that came to mind ready you post.

Does your refridgerator have a freezer? Maybe you can keep a tray of ice cubes in your freezer and just add them to the mixture at work when you're ready to go! That way it'll be cold.

Then I would not have a blender

I can get cubes or crushed from the refrigerator door anytime I need it. That way it'll be cold.

But the real question is...would it keep like a shake (smoothie) or be all runny by that time?

Hmm.. sounds to me like someone needs to conduct an experiment! All I can think of is get those insulated cups! And if that doesn't do the trick, stick it in a portable cooler. LOL

I realized that after I posted. I didn't read all the instructions so I didn't see it needed to be blended lol.

I get the same dizziness doing cardio and weight lifting, so I was told to eat an hour before, also. I usually eat a banana and wheat thins. The banana itself wasn't enough. They are also protable so you can take them with you if you are going somewhere before the gym. I was also told it may be better to eat 1/2 hour before gym time, but that kinda worries me IBS wise so I eat and hour before.
pretzels may be ok instead of wheat thins if they are harsh on your tummy, but I eat the reduced fat ones and have had no problems, even without SF.
I was also reccommended that cranberry juice could be good, too.

Yes, I was told an hour before and try a luna bar and a banana...(but that seems so heavy to me) I eat a luna bar for breakfast and then don't eat again until lunch time most of the time...I don't eat lunch until 2:30-3pm, then go to the gym 6:00'ish (classes at 6:30pm) and then eat dinner about 8:30-8:45pm. I do have snacks like baked lay or RF pringles...I used to eat wheat thins all the time back in June-Aug and then changed to Luna bars, so those are ok on my tummy. So, a small banana and wheat thins would add about 225-250 calories to my day (I can burn that off on the stair climber in 15-20 mins...at least at this current weight)

I'd be curious as to how much protein is in this shake.

Hey Jules,

I do just about the same thing, similar recipe only without soy (rice or almond milk instead) and some Acacia... and I use quite a few ice cubes in a high speed blender. I drink it about 1 1/2 to 2 hrs. before morning aerobics..then when I get home, like you, tank up on carbs.
Works wonders for me too.

Shell, I don't know why this wouldn't work keeping it in a thermos, except what I would do would be to use alt. milk ice cubes so it didn't get to watered down and then shake it good before you drink it. The ice cubes may have melted just enuf to keep it slushy like a milk shake. Kandee

Hi Shell!

This might sound kind of gross, but I do this often when I can't get home before going to the gym. My protein powder is pretty good in that you don't necessarily need a blender to mix it. So I bring a juice box of soy or rice milk and a large jar with protein powder in it and then right before or after my workout I just pour the milk in and shake it up like crazy. I take it in a lunch bag/cooler thingy (or you could keep it in the refridgerator, obviously) so it stays pretty cool all day and doesn't get gunky at all. Tastes good too, IMHO! HTH

I'm not sure if you know, but GNC's soy protein powder has sucralose (Splenda) in it. I couldn't figure out what was making me have attacks and then I read the small print on the tub. Yep, can't handle that crap.

Right now I'm using Jay Robb's Chocolate Egg White Protein Powder and it's fantastic!

What kind of protein powder do you use? Whey or soy?

Do you think it would work if you replaced water with 8oz of Rice Milk, and then omit the Soy Milk Powder? So it would look like:

1 scoop protein powder
1 T Cocoa
8 oz of Rice Milk
2t Sugar
6 ice cubes

That should probably work, eh?

1) Does it matter if I omit the Soy Milk. I have trouble with any milk, so I am wondering if skipping it will be good, or if, since it is such a small doseage, it should be no problem.

2) Would this be a good meal before bed?

3) Does this have enough SF to be a meal by itself?

4) What about fruits?

5) What kind of sugar? Will any variety do like Cinnamon Sugar?
