Butter Substitute

You guys probably already have tried this, but I find that if a recipe calls for a cup of butter, it works out just as good if you substitute that with 1/2 cup applesauce and 1/2 cup canola oil. This way it's not too spongy or too dense.

Have an organic cake mix that calls for 1/2 cup of oil--do I go 1/4c of oil and 1/4c of applesauce?
