Hi all, I am IBS-D since a child. Diagnosed with IBS in 1994 - GI specialists know nothing!!! I don't remember how long this group has been around, but I think i joined it not longer after it started and it literally saved my life. I cannot live without the peppermint oil caps and fiber!!! This post may be long, and for that I apologize.
On October 30th I had an, what I call, IBS attack. My standard descending colon cramping, hot/cold, nausea, followed by diarrhea, this episode because pretty severe cause the numbness and tingling in my hands and weakness, I was unable to hold myself on the toilet so I laid on the bathroom floor to finish (sorry) - while lying there I got this wave up pain up into my stomach that felt like someone put a pitch fork through my chest and stomach area. I thought was going to die right there on the floor. Finished got up and after that - I had very uncomfortable pain under my rib cage that felt like something was under there - that would go through into my back. If I rolled over on my right side while sleeping it would wake me up. Nausea, no more diarrhea or IBS attacks for a couple weeks. Finally because of this pain, my husband took me to the ER, they all thought gallbladder. Several tests later, blood work ok, ultrasound ok, blah blah blah - thinking ulcer - treated for that.
Fast forward about 2 weeks later - I have had unbelievable abdominal cramping and loose bowels every single day going on 4 weeks now. No matter what I eat. Some of the pain is worse then others, but always loose, no blood, no black tarry stools. I have NO idea where to go from here. I'm eating safe, have tried no gluten. Just had a negative cologard - have had several colonoscopies in my life, not one recently. I had an EDG this Thursday - waiting on the results and a stool cultures, waiting on those results as well. My questions is what the heck could this be??? Can it be Crohn's all of a sudden? Can it be Celiac all of a sudden? What do I eat - I've tried the BRAT died, nope - still cramping and diarrhea. And I've lost 8 lbs. Any help or advice is welcome!! Please - thank you!

Hi- I am so sorry you are going through this. I am stumped too. It is very unlikely you'd suddenly develop Crohn's after years, and if it was celiac you should have had symptoms long ago. It's not a bad idea to get the blood test to rule out celiac, but more just to cross that off the list.

Did they rule out gallbladder issues? The sudden flare, and unremitting symptoms, are a red flag for something other than IBS. Have they checked for infectious things like C. diff?

Please let me know any more info.

In the meatime, the safest thing to eat would be plain white rice - boring, I know, but it should calm things down. Strong peppermint tea should make you feel better as well.

Please keep us posted.

I have had 5 months of testing, so far no Crohn's. He doesn't think it's my gallbladder, but I keep asking for a HIDA scan. I've been unstable for almost 6 months now, nothing I do stops the cramping and soft stools. I've been checked for c-diff and other stool issues too. If I stop the tummy fiber can I resume it where I left off?

Hi, OwensMimi,

I'm afraid that I don't have any real words of encouragement or comfort but I do have an idea that may, depending on your situation, may be helpful.

After a lifelong tussle with my stomach/guts, I was diagnosed with IBS. I was lucky enough to get the combination type; some C, some D. The positive behind that diagnosis is that at least I know what's causing my disomfort. Knowledge, as they say, is power.

I assume you are following a low FODMAP diet. That has worked well for me.

In all your diagnostic work, have you been identified as having GERD, and, if so, are you taking a PPI to control it? I ask because some PPI drugs can cause terrific intestinal cramping and diarrhea of biblical proportions. The first one I took left me with a case of potty-lock for about 4 weeks until I called my gastro. He changed my PPI to a different formulation (apparently there are several), and this one works as it should.

I discussed my situation with my general physician. We discussed the potential benefits of hemp products, specifically canabidiol (CBD) in the treatment of IBS and other gastric difficulties. I started taking a CBD infused honey - I know it's not low FODMAP but the quantity I use has no negative impact on my system. I use about 15 mg/day and that seems to be the right dose.

Because hemp and CBD are reasonably new in the world of treatment of IBS, I have done a considerable amount of research on the subject (based on scholarly articles in medical and biological research journals) and am convinced that it does have a place in my course of treatment. You may want to discuss this with your doctor.

I wish you every good luck as you find a course of actions that leave you well and happy.

Per Papakins, I agree about the CBD. I am using the isolate 6 or so mg 4X/day before meals and at bedtime, and have updated my signature about that, mixed with mct (liq) coconut oil under the tongue for my IBS-D. I tried the full spectrum oil with all the other cannabinoids, but the isolated CBD works better. Haven't gone back yet to eating gluten or probably never again the dairy, and only do white rice with #2 baby "smooth" food for my vegetables. Lean rice and turkey. Oat milk and Good Karma unsweetened flax milk with hydrosylate gelatin by Great Lakes (easy to dissolve in cold liquids because the flax milk is 0 protein and gelatin is easy to assimilate) and stevia. I eat some other things too though, but those are the basics. My main fat is Flax oil, also. My IBS came just occasionally in my 20s within a short time after my upper GI started hurting and migraines. Then the IBS became constant at 40 years old with stress kicking it up especially when had pretty much figured out the food thing. Bowel movements caused spasming longer. Gas in the morning and in the evening mainly if don't drink enough water and have to pace consistantly throughout day. Sharp pain when waking with eventual gas. I take methylcellulose fiber that doesn't ferment, and have to keep my food soluble fiber very low, or gas really builds up and traps with sharp pain. Everyone, please read my signature too. I still end up having hypoglycemia, no matter how I do these foods, but maybe I'll keep doing better and will be able to go up in the soluble fiber and "some" insoluble fiber. But, "some" more of the insoluble re-irritated upper GI big time from the IBS colon spasming while on the full spectrum CBD oil last time, pain for months now.. Have always been on a soluble fiber and this diet, but no gluten, for years. FODMAP didn't help anything. Keeping things moving at the right pace does.

Thank you for your response. I do have Gerd, but am not in anything, started CBD, couple months ago. I don't know how much of heathers tummy fiber to take, I'm using 12 grams a day, split up in 2 bottle of water. I'm wondering if I can put the full dose in one bottle of water? Anything to get this under control.
