Splenda is an arificial sweetener and so is a no-no for IBS. Real sugar is O.K fortunately especially for those of us who love desserts! Don't go overboard though because they are just empty calories.

I thought Splenda was derived from regular sugar so I thought it might be safe. I guess it causes problems because it is altered?

It is made from real sugar, but it is chemically altered into some other molecular format that the body does not recognize as sugar. So, it is definitely an artifical product. I haven't seen any specific studies on it for how it might affect the GI tract or IBS specifically, but I'd be afraid to try it myself.
Best, Heather
