Hi all, I was recently diagnosed with IBS(C) I had a good week last week but this week no fun. I have ordered Heathers books 1st YR IBS and Eating with IBS. They will take 3 - 4 weeks to get shipped as I stay in South Africa. Could anyone help me with maintenance or some basic diet to keep me going until then. I have totally stopped eating everything inc. milk etc. I have been eating rice, salads, chicken etc. And I'm at home today totally blocked up again.
I will have to take some laxatives or something I suppose to get going again. Could anyone help me through until I can get heathers books. Also I have lost alot of weight, Please could you kind people out there get me on some basics to get through, still got to work and pay the bills and at the moment having a hard time getting along... Hope someone hears my cry. Thank you once again.

Hi,
I'm also IBS - C and I can definately relate to how you feel. It can take up to two weeks to stabilise C so keep at it and stay positive. Here are some tips that I got from Heather that helped me.
1.Start taking a soluble fiber supplement. Start with two teaspoons twice a day and work up to 2 tablespoons twice a day. I like Benefiber, Metamucil made me bloated. Benefiber is colourless and tasteless which is great.
2. Base every meal or snack on soluble fiber. (rice, pasta, potato, sweet potato, oats etc)
3. Eliminate red meat, dark poultry meat, dairy, fats, coffee, soft drink.
4. get 30 mins regular exercise every day. I like walking and its great for constipation.
5. Look into joining a yoga class - it's also great for constipation.
6. Be gently active after each meal never sit or lie down immediately after eating.
7. Drinks lots of strong peppermint or fennel tea.

There is a lot of diet info on this website that you can read while waiting for Heather's books.

I urge you to steer clear of laxatives. They may seem like a quick fix but I find thay just irritate the colon further. You would be much better to use a SF supplement and change your diet, exercise etc. It takes a little while but after a few weeks I started getting better. I hardly ever suffer from C now although I am still struggling with severe bloating.

Good Luck - let us know how you go.

Kerrie

Hi Anton - Welcome to the board! Hang in there, things really should get better. I'm going to give you a link to "breaking the cycle" info that will get you started in the right direction asap.

The link is http://www.eatingforibs.com/faq.htm

Also - even orders to South Africa should reach you in just 3-5 business days, so hopefully you won't be waiting too much longer.

Best,
Heather

Take heart! Heathers book will make such a difference. I have the opposite problem, but the basics are supposed to work in either case. Try low fat, high soluable fiber (bananas, oatmeal, rice, potatos, sweetpotatos to start) Eat your soluable fiber first then a smaller helping of salad and chicken. Eat smaller meals and high soluable fiber snacks between meals. A fiber suplement like Citracel helps too. Drink lots and lots of water. Check out the FAQs pages on this website, they should answer most of your basic questions until the book comes.

Good luck!
