Fibre supplement for IBS-D?

My question is about fibre supplements. I used to be IBS-C and used a fibre supplement to get things going. Now I am an IBS-D and am wondering if I should still take fibre to bulk things up? Can someone with IBS-D tell me if a fibre supplement helps them? I just worry that it will make things worse even though Heather's book suggests it won't. Thanks!

I know hard to believe! But it really does work for IBS-D. And the Acacia has worked better for me than anything else due to virtually no side affects. I started out in low dosages and have worked by way up to about 2 or 2.5 Tbls throughout the day. I used to take Immodium every day sometimes 2x a day and now I only take it maybe once every 2 weeks. I was getting myself Constipated on the Immodium then when I would go off of it, I would have the D again. It was a vicious cycle. But stick to the IBS diet and the fiber and you'll notice an improvement in the big "D". I also take Acidophalus daily.

Good luck!

Hi Sara,

Heather's right. Trust her. She's been there.

I am a D also, and I take acacia. I'm up to 2-1/2 tablespoons a day. I also take Equalactin when I feel cramps coming on or have a stressful event.

I also take a probiotic every day.

I feel better than I have in a very long time, and it's getting even better every day. Now, bear with me if this gets a little gross; I'll try to tone it down a little. My trips to the bathroom are good ones, very satisfying, no D at all. I go at least twice a day, sometimes 3 times, and they're all very firm and, well, relieving. Also, they float (which means I'm getting enough fiber), whereas before I took the supplements they sank -- and they weren't nearly as "firmed up".

My apologies to anyone who might have been offended by this. I hope it helps you regain some confidence, Sara. Don't worry, the supplements won't make things worse, they'll make them better.

Heather would NOT lead you astray.

I'm also IBS-D and the fiber supplements absolutely make a difference. They help with regular bowel movements and no D.

Thanks for your response. I will order some this week.

Don't worry, I don't get grossed out by bowel movement details. I'd have a very rough time if I did! Thanks again.

Hi - how do you do with soluble fiber foods like plain white rice, pasta, white breads, cream of rice cereal? You may need to get your body quite adjusted to those as the foundation of each and every meal. Some folks seem to just be super sensitive to any soluble fiber supplement, though it is really odd that you'd react to just 1/2 tsp. That's less than one gram, and you're getting more than that with soluble fiber foods all the time if you're regularly eating those.

I'd disagree that the diet is too restrictive. It does eliminate some foods completely (red meat, dairy, coffee, soda pop) but no one should be eating those for their overall health anyway. You can get lots of fresh fruits, veggies, grains, cereals, lentils, beans, plus egg whites, soy, seafood, and skinless chicken/turkey breasts, and this is the foundation of a really healthy diet. It's how you eat that makes as much of a difference as what you eat. I'd like to know if your doc has actually seen the recipes in Eating for IBS, because I'd be really amazed if he thought they were too restricting.

I really hope you're feeling better soon. Let me know if you're eating plenty of soluble fiber foods, and for now just stay off the supplement. I have a hunch that since you've had such bad experiences with supplements in the past you may be anticipating problems, and that dread can trigger an attack in and of itself.

Take care of yourself.

Heather's given you a great website here, so that should answer the first part of your post.

I got a lot better after I went through the hypnotherapy program; congrats on ordering it! Michael is incredible.

While I would say that I've got mine under control, I still have occasional bouts. What has helped me pinpoint my triggers is a food diary. I've kept it now for over 2 years -- I'm on volume 6 -- and whenever I have an attack, I look back on what I've eaten the day before, and every time I've been able to spot the culprit. So by now I know what I can eat and what I can't -- oh, and how MUCH I can eat too!

Now, as to the last part of your post: I am not a doctor and would never contradict any doctor, and I'm glad you've found a "super internal medical doctor," but as regards Heather's diet, I can say from EXPERIENCE that Heather's diet is most definitely NOT "too restricting." Thank God for Heather's diet! My only complaint is that I can't lose any weight on it! Now, that's not the diet's fault, it's my lousy metabolism and lack of sufficient exercise. It seems, no matter how much exercise I do, my body just won't let go of it! And now, unfortunately, my doctor is about to put me on diet pills -- groan -- but that's a whole different issue.

On the advise of an IBS friend, I've recently started taking citrucil AND immodium which has improved things. I've heard of equalactin but never tried it. Is it like a combo of the above - or - works for cramping pain or what?

Equalactin is just a soluble fiber supplement, like Citrucel or Acacia or Benefiber. It's got the same ingredient in it as Fibercon, but Equalactin is chewable, and I actually think that makes a big difference in how effective it is. Don't really know why, but it does seem to...

Heather I am trying to stay as close to your diet as possible.Problem is I live in West Texas & you don't find to much of natural anything! The health food store are far & few between. I do have problem with Veggie. And I did away with Coke,Caff,& I drink lots of bottle (Only) Water! I am doing better with aleast not being down for 3 or 4 days at a time. I did not show your book to the Dr. But gave him the basic of it.Of course Dr. do not always think common sence.I use to do nothing but Homepathy Med. before I came down with this. I appreciate all the advice.

So chewable works better or worse than than swallowing tablets or drinking powder in water? Curious because I want to take the very best one and can't take metamucil.

Yes, let the doctor sit on the toilet for 4-6 hours in pain and he'd be trying Heather's diet too. I really don't believe they realize how unbelievably painful it is. It's one thing to have quick diahhrea (bad enough) but to cramp for so many hours you end up vomiting & shaking from pain is quite another. Mine may be worse because I have adhesions on top of IBS. Sounds like most of you have quick - D, or am I wrong. Do any of you have hours and hours of bent over cramps? I'd love to know as I just atttibute it to the adhesions but maybe it's just one of the many forms of the "d" type.

Sometimes I've been so bad I didn't even care if I was eating healthy, just wanted to be able to function in life for as long as I could, when eating healthy meant more pain.

Well, I don't know about adhesions, but I do know about D and those cramps you're talking about! Yes, that's what I would consider my serious time, when I pull out the "heavy guns" (Donnatal). Heather uses her peppermint caps; she say it works better as an anti-spasmodic than Donnatal. I've commented on this several times in these boards because it bears repeating -- that blows me away because Donnatal always works for my serious cramps when my other meds don't. You might consider trying her peppermint caps.

Haha...it rhymes!! Sorry...I'm amused by small things.
I usually get the aching stomach almost everyday but when it comes to D it's always something that comes on very quickly out of nowhere and then after I've made a few trips to the washroom I'm not too bad anymore although sometimes I still have the dull aching pain.

For me, the powders dissolved in water work best. Then the chewables. Last (but still better than nothing) is tablets that are swallowed whole.

Don't rule out other powders because of Metamucil. Most folks with IBS can't tolerate psyllium because of the bloating and gas it causes. But other powders are not made from psyllium, and can be MUCH more tolerable. It's also easier to get a lot higher dose of soluble fiber from powders than from pills. Acacia has 4.5 grams of soluble fiber per tablespoon, and Equalactin has .5 gram of soluble fiber per tablet. So you'd have to chew a lot of tablets to get the fiber you could get from just a glass or two of Acacia. That's why I actually like to combine the two. I use the powder Acacia at home every day, but keep Equalactin or other tablets in my purse to take at restaurants or when I'm out of the house and going too long without eating.

Really, I do. It's annoying!

Before I gave up coffee and started Heather's diet, I got the super quick arrival, agonizingly long and painful episodes on the toilet. I would be there for such a long time, sweating, cramping, tears flowing. Horrible!

Then after starting the diet it's gotten better- not so much with the GET THE HECK OUT OF MY WAY urgency (still urgent, but I haven't had to kill anyone to get to the potty!). I have the "quick version," I suppose, now, when I do have a flareup (which is increasingly less frequent!). Though on my "bad" days, I have frequent trips that are not nearly as painful and dramatic. I may have to go 4 or 5 times, but it's not as bad as it used to be.

The cramps are THE WORST. When I get sick, I get SICK. I'm in the bathroom for hours... and often I throw up too I'm in so much pain. Yuck, yuck, yuck. I have an appointment with my doctor on Monday and I'm going to ask her about the Donnatal in case of emergencies...

That's the way I feel when I have my attacks too... although I'm mostly C since starting the diet and thankfully don't have them very often anymore. But I also get very flushed and feel extremely nautious, although unlike you I've never actually thrown up. But I always hold onto a bucket while I'm sitting on the toilet just in case. It's such an agonizing feeling.

The best thing to keep by the toilet is an old-fashion chamber pot. Guests don't know the real reason why it's there; they think it's just charming 'cause it's old. You can keep your toilet brush in it or your plunger or rolls of toilet paper or bath soaps. Then, when you have a double-ender attack, you just pull out the chamber pot!

Since we have only one bathroom at present, I actually have 2 chamber pots. Don't ask.

Jen, about being in denial on the coffee, one of my friends has IBS and he just can't give up his coffee either. He knows he should, but he just keeps saying piteously, "Anything but that!"

No, LauraSue, I don't. I e-mailed her, but she didn't answer.

It's a little scary having someone disappear like that all of a sudden and not answering e-mails. Makes me worry a little -- no, makes me worry a lot. I don't know what else to do.

When Ruchie left the boards before, I bugged her and made her come back -- then I got to thinking, well, what if she didn't WANT to come back, you know? I don't want to bug anyone.

Yeah, Kandee was fun, and I miss her. I just hope and pray she's alright.

Thanks for your post, Laura!

Yeah, I hope she's okay too. I'm sure she is. Sometimes life just gets too busy or complicated. We'll just have to keep the jokes going without her.

So, I'll take this opportunity to tease you a little about your relationship with a certain Mr. Daniels -- does your husband know about him??!!

Please tell your friend that the sooner he gives up that coffee, the sooner he'll get better. If he doesn't give up the coffee, it ain't gonna happen.

I was SOOO in denial. I figured if I gave up the stress, gave up my job, gave up everything else and stuck with the program, I could have one vice -- my beloved cuppa joe -- but boy, was I WRONG!

I got this post from Heather: Heather's Post and the next day I went cold turkey.

If we can give up smoking -- and wasn't that ever tough! -- we can give up coffee. I had a 42-year addiction to coffee. I know it's hard. But I wanted to get better -- even harder.

Help your friend. Turn him on to Constant Comment tea (with caffeine for awhile, then they have the decaf kind) and Soy Dream Mocha Fudge (you know that stuff by now!). The "ice cream" tastes like the best cup of coffee you've ever had. It has a tiny bit of coffee in it, low on the ingredient list.

Your friend can do it, I KNOW -- with your help.

Yes, LauraSue, he does. We often get together, the three of us.

Yes, Girlfriend, I could use superfluous effluence in a sentence, but not on these boards.

You are not alone. Mine is also slow and agonizing when I have an attack. I can feel the cramping starting in my right side, move around my back into my left side where it feels like I can't even catch my breath. Then it graduallly works its way out. This usually takes at least an hour if not longer. Sometimes my legs actually cramp up from sitting so long. It's a horrible thing to go through, that's for sure.

Consider yourself sort of lucky that it is only an hour for you instead of 2-6 hrs.

Bev, I missed this post too! I don't understand why that happens. I read everything marked unread religiously so how could I miss things? Maybe I'll ask the technical folks.

Anyway, you're right about my friend needing to give up coffee. Unfortunately I've found that as long as people are still in denial, any suggestions just make them dig in their heels and get stubborn. Subconciously he knows damn well he shouldn't be drinking it, so I wouldn't be telling him anything he didn't already know.

He'll figure it out when he's ready. And then he'll wonder how he could have been such an idiot all those years!!
