I am so glad that I found this website. I bought Heather's book online the other night (IBS--The First Year), so hopefully I will get it before the weekend. GAWD. I was such an idiot tonight. I absolutely could not resist my mom's veggie chili. And now I am paying for it. I even ate it with RICE!!!!!!!!! I love chili so much, but the beans cause me so much trouble, and my poor hubby has had to deal with it all night, if you get my drift. Well, tomorrow lunch it will be a baked potato with fat free sour cream (I tolerate that fine) and nothing else but fennel tea. I have to figure out something until I get that sacred book in the mail. But I wanted to tell you all that you all are awesome because of the great advice you have given me regarding eating vegetables. I have since found out all that info on this site about cooking or steaming them thoroughly, but I think I just panicked and that is why I wrote that plaintive first post. Anyhow, thanks so much.

Jen

Hi Jen,

Have you checked the recipe board? I posted a recipe in there for tofu chili (I think -- didn't I? Yeah, I did.) You still have to take Beano with it, but if you love chili this might work for you. Hubby and I love it. Alternatively, if the chili beans tear up your tummy, why not try lentils instead? Check out the recipe in the recipe board for lentil soup with sausage. Again, you need the Beano, but I believe lentils are easier on the tummy than chili beans.

Glad you ordered Heather's book. It'll help you A LOT. Interesting that you can still tolerate dairy. That's surprising.

Are you taking fiber supplements? How much?

Don't be so hard on yourself about giving in to temptation. We all do it, and of course ultimately pay the price in the end, one way or another!

Hi Bevrs,

I love that you guys have learned to use the images - but that last image is a little too much. If you don't mind, maybe tone down the gross images?

Thanks!

What "gross images"? The smiley face icons, or the fact that we discuss our constipation, gas, and other bowel dysfunction openly? Either way, I think you are being WAY too sensitive, if you weren't joking to begin with. And the smiley faces are not "gross" at all. I'm not sure what offends you about them.

Actually, Bevrs already took the image off Scully. It was a picture of a little boy throwing up.

And to be honest, I rarely get offended by anything. But I am really not feeling good (as are a lot of people) and seeing pictures of other people throwing up just doesn't help.

Thanks for taking the image away, Bevrs!

As for the chili, it's the beans that bother me the most, and I'm a vegetarian. Sometimes there is no way around the beans. As for the dairy, it depends on the dairy. Fat-free sour cream does not bother me, but yogurt and cheese do. I drink soy milk and eat soy yogurt instead.

About fiber, I am actually afraid to take a fiber supplement because of the choking hazard associated with ingesting it (e.g., not taking enough water with it accidentally could make the fiber expand in your throat)I know, it sounds stupid. But in my diet, I have found that if I include lots of dietary fiber, it actually makes the gas and bloating WAY worse. So I don't know what to do. I'm on Zelnorm right now. Any ideas?

Jen.

To me, it just looked like how I feel when I have gas. I probably "look" constipated with my face all screwed up like that. Sorry -- had no idea it was supposed to be something else.

only the ones that gel in the glass (Metamucil and Citrucel). If you mix a glass of Acacia or Benefiber you can let it stand overnight, and it still won't gel. So those don't have the choking hazard.

Also - make sure you're distinguishing between soluble and insoluble fibers. Check here for info web page

Best,
Heather
