I started going to this highly recommended GI and had all the tests (Colonoscopy, endo, bloodtests, etc) and my doctor says that I have a hiatal hernia, IBS, and she thinks I may have "Celiac Tendencies" although the tests came out negative for Celiac disease and every other disease/infection. There is basically NOTHING I can eat-for breakfast I have rice krispies with a banana in water(because I can't have milk and don't like soymilk), for lunch and dinner I have the same thing-Broiled chicken with either boiled white rice or a plain, baked potato and sometimes a scoopful of peas(with beano.) This seems to be the only thing that both diets allow me to eat. The strange thing is that I can eat potato chips and french onion dip, brownies, etc. like there is no tomorrow and I will feel great for weeks, and then all of a sudden I will be in excruciating pain for a few days. My GI says that all of the food that I am not supposed to be eating builds up in my stomach and then weeks later when it has accumulated enough, it makes me very sick. I didn't think food stayed in your system for weeks at a time..Am I wrong? Also, does anybody know of anything else that I can eat with both the IBS and Gluten-free diet? Not being able to eat has caused me to look like a skeleton and I'm very depressed. Please help..

Danielle: You've come to the right place. I am also on a gluten free diet and have IBS. Actually there are several of us. First of all, check out breaking the cycle
at: Breaking the Cycle it will help you break out of the vicious cycle you're in. Then, learn and follow the diet (within your own limits) and you will start feeling better and gain some weight back. I had everyone accusing me of being anorexic because I had lost so much weight, it was more of a matter of being afraid to eat. Heather's program will teach you which foods are safe, which are not. You cannot binge though, this is an every day diet that you will learn to live by. I eat a lot of roasted chicken, rice dishes, grilled fish, grilled chicken, cooked vegetables, some canned fruit and low fat crackers. Each of us are different though, you'll have to learn your own trigger foods to stay away from. I can't tolerate a food additive for thickening, guar gum, maybe you can (these are the little things you will learn about your own digestive system). We all learn to read labels here and follow the diet. Ask if you have any questions, there are always people here to answer.

Hi - your GI doc's comment about food staying in your stomach for weeks, building up, and then causing problems, is just too strange. This is a medical doctor who told you this?! Can you ask him to elaborate on this?

Try rice, almond, or oat milk if you don't like soy. Try root veggies like sweet potatoes, beets, rutabagas, turnips, parsnips, etc. For soluble fiber food foundations, you can eat corn cereals, corn meal, baked corn chips, rice noodles, all kinds of rice, potatoes, buckwheat noodles, tapioca, and more.

Check the recipe board for posts by Kandee (EYEBSER). She's got a wealth of info for going gluten free and being IBS safe, and there's no need for you to follow the really limited diet you're on. Hang in there...things should get better (and much tastier) for you soon.
