Hi,
I'm still pretty new here, so I apologize if this has been asked before. I have had IBS symptoms for the past few years, but just over the past few months they have gotten a lot worse. I'll have the most problems in the morning right after I wake up. With my old position at my company I was on call 24/7 and would often get paged at 2am, and once paged I'd have to rush to work (and not have access to a washroom often for hours). Needless to say, this was very tough on my system. I've been able to get another position that isn't an on call position, but still does require earlyish mornings.
I find when I wake up, I'm usually fine for 20 minutes, then have discomfort for another 20 or so, and then need the washroom, rather urgently. Anybody have any suggestions as to how to change that? I've been on a very strict diet, similar to the one discussed here, and although it makes a big difference, mornings are still a problem.
Thanks, Jamie

Hi Jamie,
I think that we get into a regular routine that our bodies are used to, and it's really difficult to break that cycle. I am a "D" and mornings are always the worst for me; they always have been the times when I do most, if not all, of my poops. When I first get up, the cramps begin -- and continue until I've finished all my poops. Sometimes that takes all morning long. I've tried to change this by not eating for several hours before bed, changing what I do eat before bed, and recently began taking probiotics at midnight.
I think I'm fighting a losing battle. That's just when my body wants to do its thing. I know what you're talking about, because when I was working I'd have this same problem, and the only solution for me was to get used to getting up a lot earlier to allow for my morning ritual.
Fun stuff, eh?

For me, mornings are the absolute worst! As soon as I open my eyes, my tummy kicks into gear. I try to drink a cup of herbal tea (like fennel) right before I go to bed and that seems to help. Other than that, I try to give myself some extra time in case an attack hits. When I'm rushing around, my symptoms tend to get even worse. I hope you feel better soon. Kristine

I agree, it's hard to change the way our bodies want to work. I also have to go not too long after I wake up in the morning, and it was difficult to deal with when I was student teaching. But sometimes the best thing to do is just go with the flow and let our bodies get rid of the BMs when they need to.

My mornings are bad, but not that bad. Right away in the morning when I get up I have to pea. But then it's not until about 10 minutes later that I have a bowel movement. Drives my roomates crazy when trying to fit in a shower! We have to arrange all of our morning routines just because of my bowel. oh well!

Hi, my problem is D and mornings are my worst time. I just accept it and therefor plan for it. I allow myself extra time before work to sip fennel tea, to relax and of course, to sit on the toilet. I also take extra time in the shower with the hot water on my tummy. I start eating very light in the morning and eat small snacks, then a bigger lunch. I try to eat a smaller portion at dinner and as IBS safe as possible. All this helps, it's a way to deal and say to myself, okay, I know the mornings are bad, this is how I am going to handle it. Cheers

Thanks for all the replies. It's nice (although unfortunate for everybody) to know that it's not only me that has that problem.
Like the rest of you, I have pretty much decided that it's just something I'm going to have to live with and give myself extra time in the morning. I'm thankful for my new position as the majority of the time, if I have an early morning flight, I'll know about it the night before, and therefore can actually get up earlier and give myself the extra time that my body may need.

Have a dose of your soluble fiber supplement, have a cup (or two) of strong, hot peppermint or fennel tea. Make your dinner a pretty light meal, and very low fat. Have a light soluble fiber snack a little later later in the evening. Try to get to bed earlier to get extra sleep - hard to do, but can make a big diff!
As soon as you get up have a strong hot cup of the herbal tea and a dose of soluble fiber supplement. Move around a bit, do your morning routine, then have a high soluble fiber small-ish breakfast.
Hope that helps a bit.

Sure, you can take it in tea or your oatmeal, as well as in plain water. It really doesn't matter - it will still work the same way in your body.
