I just ordered the #2 kit. I'm in a huge flare up, distended 8 inches for a couple of months now. This is my plan can you tell me if I'm on track after reading the website? I have no life right now. I'm housebound. I only feel better if I don't eat, and liquids only is hard to sustain.

I'm just going to eat rice or potatos or pasta, or bread for a couple days and fennel tea. I don't know what to put on the potatoes or pasta. Does a little butter hurt. Or zero fat?

After a couple days I can try a little IF, green beans maybe. Is there a ratio to start like 25? IF to SF?

I tried some probiotics and that sent me to the ER, the bloat was so bad. I can't work, I'm getting married in a couple months and I cannot get married laying down. I'm IBS-C... 13 years of hell still.

Thanks Heather for this site.

Hi Wendy - oh my goodness, I really hope you are feeling better soon. This is really extreme bloating.

You have been diagnosed with IBS? They ruled out celiac and inflammatory bowel diseases?

Your plan sounds good, that's the breaking the cycle diet, and it should really help after just a few days. Then keep those soluble fiber foundation foods and carefully start to add insoluble fiber - chopped, cooked, blended, etc. Maybe a 75/25 ratio in terms of visually what's on your plate, soluble/insoluble.

I'd go zero fat while breaking the cycle - it's boring, but you really don't want anything in your gut but soluble fiber and strong herbal teas during that period.

The probiotics sending you to the ER is very interesting - do you still have the bottle? Can you see if there is inulin, FOS, or GOS in there? If yes, then you might have an extreme FODMAPS sensitivity to that particular FODMAP.

If that's the case, working with a dietitian who knows both IBS in general, and FODMAPS for IBS on top of that, would be a good idea to pinpoint your specific sensitivities. That can really help with the bloating.

If FODMAPS are excluded, you could also look into gut-directed hypnotherapy for IBS. You can see practitioners or if you are housebound (I am so sorry!!) you can do an at home program. It's about a three month process, but people can see results very quickly, and commonly they will see improvements before the end of the program.

There's tons of info starting here http://www.helpforibs.com/hypnosis/
