I have severe bloating and gas after every thing I eat, doesn't matter what it is...I am also mainly IBS-C. I started using the tummy fiber, and it seemed to help I started with the dose the directions said, and then increased, I don't know if I increased to quickly or what but I ended up with HORRIBLE gas pains....worst I have ever had...I stopped taking it and the pain has stopped. Any thoughts??

It is very concentrated, so that can be easy to do.

For the Tummy Fiber Acacia to work properly, it's crucial that you start with a low dose (1/2 teaspoon twice daily) and gradually increase to a dose high enough to resolve constipation (which may be 4-5 tablespoons a day). If you get gas or bloating, that means that you increased your dose too quickly. It can take several weeks to gradually increase up to the dose you'd likely need to resolve constipation, and unfortunately you can't rush this. Tummy Fiber is not a drug or a laxative so it won't work overnight.

A good rate of increase is to add an extra 1/2 tsp to just one of your daily doses, every 3-4 days. That way you are staggering your increase and going gradually. As you get your dose up you may be able to increase by 1 tsp at a time, as your gut will get used to more fiber.

I really feel for the constipation folks, since it takes some patience to start slowly, increase gradually, and eventually get your daily dose high enough to resolve symptoms. A lower dose can't worsen constipation, but it won't resolve it, either.

Having the fiber at least twice a day - and you can have it more often - is also key, as you want to keep your gut filled with soluble fiber at all times. That will help prevent cramping and spasms in the first place.

Constipation and IBS new

I read the tips on constipation, and have a question. You said "The very act of eating, in and of itself, triggers your gastrocolic reflex, which in turn signals your colon to start contracting. The rhythmic waves of contractions - called peristalsis". I have been diagnosed with Gastroparesis and would like to know how this affects my IBS. Also, when I was diagnosed with IBS it was diarrhea (2004) and in Sept(2015) it changed to IBS-C. Does this happen alot? Since I never had this issue, I am finding it hard to deal with the constipation, bloating, gas, painful cramps and feeling like I am having a baby when I go to the bathroom. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi - I'm not familiar with gastroparesis and how that might affect IBS, I'm so sorry.

It is not uncommon for IBS to flip between diarrhea and constipation. Sometimes people routinely go back and forth, and sometimes people can be D for years and then suddenly switch to C, or vice versa.

Using soluble fiber foods and a soluble fiber supplement can gently force your bowel into normal motility, resolving both diarrhea and constipation.

Just so you understand why I thought this was related to my IBS. "Gastroparesis is a condition in which your stomach cannot empty itself of food in a normal fashion"

My stomach does not digest food like it should because the stomach muscles don't contract like they should. When I eat, food sits in my stomach which causes all kinds of other issues. I just wondered how it might affect my IBS.

Thanks for your help, I have both your powder and the peppermint oil that I take everyday. I have been bad about taking the powder so I need to work on that. Thank you.
