Here is another similar question: I have tried Acacia many times to no avail, ramping up in the tiniest increments...why can some tolerate it and do well, while others cannot? What I have been told is the cause for problems with prebiotics is bad bacteria in the first place, that until the bad bacteria is eradicated, prebiotics will simply feed them, making matters worse. Can someone here weigh in on that theory, give another, etc? Thanks again!!

Hi - fiber tolerances vary, and acacia is considered to have a "good gastrointestinal tolerance", meaning it's unlikely to cause bloating and gas. Acacia ferments very slowly in the gut - a good thing. Other prebiotics such as inulin and FOS ferment very rapidly, causing severe gas and bloating. But some folks don't seem to tolerate any fiber supplements at all - I'm not sure why.

Prebiotics don't feed bad bacteria. They create a climate in the gut, through fermentation and the creation of short chain fatty acids, that encourages the growth of good bacteria. The good bacteria then keep the bad bacteria in check.

Best,
H
