I just read Heather's newsletter from yesterday, "Is Dairy an IBS Trigger?" and had a question. Apart from the fat and the lactose, what makes dairy difficult to digest? She mentions casein and whey as being dairy proteins: are they what make it difficult?

I'm wanting to understand because I was recently tested for a dairy sensitivity and found not to have one. I haven't been eating dairy for about 12 years, since I discovered Heather's diet. But am wondering if I might be able to?

Hello! It's the combination of all those factors that makes dairy so hard on IBS.

It's just not possible to get non fat, non lactose, non casein, non whey dairy.

They'll test folks for outright dairy allergies, and for lactose intolerance, but if you have IBS you can test negative for all these things and STILL have problems with dairy.

If you've been totally off dairy for 12 years (and wow! you go way back ) then try adding a little bit, when you're feeling stable, and see what happens. You might have a tolerance for low fat dairy in small portions, especially on a full stomach.

Just beware that this can sneak up on you - you could be fine with a little cheat here and there, but if you start cheating every day you could get hit hard by the cumulative effect after several days.

Trial and error it if you want to experiment, just pay attention to how you're feeling so you don't suddenly get hit with an attack.

XOXO
Heather
