IBS-C
A few yrs ago I found this site and the advice plus the teas and soluble fiber has really changed my life. Recently I have become constipated again and cannot seem to get regulated-dealing with constipation and bloating. Its frustrating especially in light of how good things were going. I am having bm's just nothing like I was, it seems my whole schedule has been thrown off. The problem is I do not know what I did. This happened once before but that time it was obvious because I had relapsed on Cokes Coffee and just about everything else. This time is different, everything was going great, no bloating, no constipation, and then boom everything changed. The only things that I ate that I dont normally eat are strawberries cut up real small and not too many. I ate them with apple sauce. I also drank some apple juice for a couple nights. And I ate out one night chicken fajita with some cooked veggies (onions and bell peppers). It was greasy but I can usually handle some or if not I usually have a bad day or too but correct. I have gotten a little better over the past 10 days but still struggling. Looking for advice?? I seem to be having a hard time with insoluble fiber. In the past what I would do is take the acacia (7 teaspoons a day) and balance out and then slowly add some metamucil about a 1/2 a teaspoon twice a day.

Have you tried combining Heather's diet (EFI) with the low FODMAP approach? Many of the foods (apples, onions) can be problematic for people with IBS.

I have not tried the FODMAP diet but have read some about it. I am trying not to make things too complicated because things were going really well for quite a while and then something happened, not sure what. The only things that I ate that are out of the ordinary are apple juice, strawberries with apple sauce, I had some beef stew but did not eat the beef, aspargus with chicken, and ate out one night chicken fajitas with grilled veggies probably too much grease. Whatever it was really has changed my bm's for the worse.

Apples and applesauce contain more of the sugar fructose than the sugar glucose.

In some people the excess fructose - a high FODMAP - cannot be digested and it passes quickly to the colon where it acts as fast food for the bacteria that live there.

Bacteria produce gas when they ferment excess fructose. This can result in a worsening of IBS symptoms for all IBS subtypes.

For a good overview of the FODMAP diet see this article by Kate Scarlata - a RD with IBS - who specialises is very knowledgeable about the FODMAP approach

Hi Ray - you could try breaking the cycle for several days to get your gut reset to a calm point.

Since you were doing so well before, and something set you off, getting back to baseline should calm down your gut and get you back to stable. Then you can pick up where you were before.

The apple juice, beef stew, and too much grease in the fajitas all could have been the culprits - it may also have been the combination of all of them that was just too much.

Keep us posted.

XOXO
Heather

I am working on breaking the cycle but its tough. The last time this happened I knew what was going on because I had started drinking cokes and coffee again. But this time I caught off guard, which concerns me some. I am trying to stabilize with moderate success, dealing with bloating especially by the evening time. Will update again soon, hopefully.

do you think I should cut my normal dose of acacia fiber down to the 1/2 level teaspoon twice a day as stated in the breaking the cycle section? currently I am taking 7 teaspoons a day.
The last time this happened to me I did start completely over but do I have to?

No - if you're already worked up to a higher dose of Tummy Fiber stay there. In fact, you can continue to gradually increase that dose - it will help you re-stabilize.
