Hi,
I spoke to a nutritionist yesterday and she told me most IBS is caused by parasites. Has anyone found that to be true or has anyone gone through the parasite cleanse?

There is no link between IBS and parasites. However, some parasites can cause IBS like symptoms. Parasites are easily detectable. It might be a good ideas to ask your GP for a stool test to confirm you have parasites before starting any kind of cleansing diet.

Hi Syl,
I have an appointment with a naturapath this Thursday.
I know they are big on parasite and candida treatments. I was on the SCD diet for candida and that is how I lost all of the weight. It seems to me that most candida diets pull all grain and a lot of carbohydrates out. I'm really concerned I will lose more weight if they want me to do that.
Ever since I took that probiotic (I took it for 7 days and have been off of it for 3 days) I have terrible gas and bloating. The gas wakes me up at 4am and I can't go back to sleep. Any advice?

Good luck. BTW - it was conclusively shown about 25 years ago that there is no connection between candida and IBS even though it is still a popular diagnosis by naturopaths.

After more than 25 years of speculation about the role of Candida in IBS no connection has been found by IBS researchers. Here is an excerpt from a letter to the editor in the Journal of Postgraduate Medicine

The role of Candida albicans in the pathogenesis of food-intolerant irritable bowel syndrome

The role of Candida albicans in the pathogenesis of food-intolerant irritable bowel syndrome

"Middleton and colleagues' are to be congratulated in demonstrating that there is no conclusive link between overgrowth of intestinal Candida albicans and the symptomatology of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Sadly, I suspect that the popular health magazines and alternative practitioners who persuade patients that these symptoms are directly linked to the pseudoscience of 'leaky bowels' and Candida toxins' are unlikely to alter their views."

Here a link to the original article that concluded "Overgrowth of C. albicans is not the cause of food intolerance in patients with IBS and anticandidal drugs should not be used in the treatment of this condition."

IBS is NOT parasites, and NOT candida. You cannot "cleanse" IBS away - it's a dysfunction of the nervous system of the gut. Naturopaths should know this.

Cleanses of all kinds are very likely to make IBS much worse, as they are harsh insults to the gut.

Parasites can mimic IBS symptoms. But any family practice or GI doc can order stool samples to check for parasites, and treat you for them if you have them. This would mean you then have parasites, not IBS.

I am mystified as to how the brain-gut dysfunction behind IBS, which has decades of clinical research and findings at this point, is just completely ignored by some naturopaths in favor of flat-out-proven-wrong myths about IBS and candida or parasites. This is on par with old school GI docs telling someone with IBS they just need to relax, because it's all in their head. To me, both of these forms of ignorance verge on medical malpractice.

Best,
H

Hi,
Everything I eat gives me gas, instantly, Is this IBS?
I am still working on a diagnosis for my problem.
2 weeks ago I had a gastrointestinal scope done. It was the one that went through my mouth. The doctor told me he found no problems but took biopsies. The biopsies will not be ready until Jan 21. The gastro doctor believes the gluten allergy
caused a digestive problem that has not corrected itself but I will not find out until Jan 21.
On Heather's diet the D is managed but the gas is almost unbearable. I drink the fennel tea but it doesn't stop the gas attacks. They are really bad in the morning. They start around 4am and and go until 4pm. I never get a good night's sleep. Because I am so underweight I have to eat every hour and a half or I get very shakey, weak and start sweating. It is quite scarey. Every time I eat the gas starts. I am eating a diet at this point of that is almost entirely rice, potatoes, sweet potatoes and chicken broth. Everything else is too painful to digest.
Tomorrow I go to the naturapath. I want to be prepared. If this is IBS I don't want to do any heavy cleanses and lose any more weight. When I took those probiotics for 6 days I had really awful gas and I still have not recovered from that episode.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

The carbohydrates in the FODMAP elimination/re-introduction diet can cause gas. The focus of the clinically tested FODMAP dietary approach for managing IBS symptoms is the reduce of gas in the colon.
