What do you do when you suddenly have a bloating/gas attack? Yesterday I was in a restaurant when I suddenly was surprised by an attack. I was not feeling happy and hoping that no guests would be seated next to our table...it was a 2nd course out of 4...

It felt like I was 9 months pregnant..so bloated and I felt so embarrassed also being gassy.. and it smelled bad... But well, the next morning I felt better again. But what can you do on that moment when it suddenly attacks you and you cannot leave?

Thanks for answers.

just excuse yourself and go to the bathroom, or outside if it's nice enough and walk back and forth a bit. Moving around in general gets your bowel moving as well, and can help bloating and gas.

I keep peppermint teabags in my purse or car for restaurant use - if you're more prone to bloating keep fennel tea on hand. Altoids mints can also help in a pinch, and can be kept in purse or car. Chew up two at a time, and just keep eating them - they will get spasms under control, are great for pain, and can help reduce bloating and gas too.

Must have been something you ate - it's so frustrating when that happens in a restaurant because it's usually that they've added something unexpected to a dish you wouldn't have thought would be in there. So you weren't able to ask that they leave it out.

If it happens again and you don't have anything on you, see if they have any kind of herbal tea bag in house. Likely they'll have peppermint, but just about all herbs/spices are digestive aids and can help.

Oh - and if you have a hot pack of any kind on you (one of those stick ones, for example) that can help too.

Thanks for your reply. I'll keep it in mind next time to get up and walk around for a moment and the herbal teas. It's strange that I drink them a lot but I don't think about it when I am in a restaurant. I know I did make the bad choices for diner in the restaurant.. but I felt great for a few weeks so I suppose I could expect the attacks by the foods I had, but I forgot to think ibs related when I saw the choices I coukd make..

I guess it was a moment to learn from wrong choices. Saskia
