Hello,

I had two Eggo waffles today with non-dairy butter and real maple syrup.

Afterwards, I had cramps.

I am confused, as I thought maple syrup was IBS safe??

Thanks!

Generally speaking all grade of pure maple syrup contains equal or greater amount of glucose than fructose. However, grade A maple syrup has a tiny amount more fructose than glucose but the difference is so small it should not matter.

Were you using a pure or artificial maple syrup?

What non-dairy butter were you using?

Hi Syl,

Thanks for replying to my question!

We use Great Value (Walmart brand) real maple syrup.

The butter I used was Smart Balance Buttery Spread with Extra Virgin Olive Oil. I think it has about 2% or less dairy in it. I seem to tolerate this OK.

They should both be okay. Not sure what might have happened. You might experiment eating the same thing again at another time and see if it occurs again. Not much help I am afraid:(

Too much of even heart-healthy fats can cause IBS cramps - if you really spread it thick that might be an issue. Can't think of anything else...

Was it an odd variety of Eggo waffles and not the plain version?

Best,
H

It was the original Eggo waffles.

I will try to use less of the heart healthy "butter"!

Wow, I am SO MAD!! It seems like I can't have ANY of my favorite foods anymore!!

Sometimes I wonder if life is even WORTH LIVING now!!!

Heather,

Are the Eggo waffles actually safe? They contain eggs and dairy. I bought a box of the low-fat kind but I am afraid to eat them. The eggs wouldn't bother me, but I haven't had dairy in a few years.

Thanks!

I guess you shouldn't think by every pain/cramp it is about the food you just had. Your body isn't stabilized completely yet. Besides that, sometimes you can get cramps just because you are to affraid to eat anything. So your body is already scared for any food what will come in. I've had myself this situation and I started with the hypno cd's and trying just to relax in live again. My body was just so stressed, and my mind also, I couldn't eat anything without D or cramps. Whatv helped me also to relax was starting with running. Very skow and nearby my house 'in case of'. I could run 5 km's away from home within 6 months. Learn to listen to your body, don't freak it out with every meal you have. It is difficult but make it your goal. Learning to listen to your body snd take good care for it. Swimming is also very relaxing. Good luck.
