Hello,
Following the advice on this website + in Heather's books, over the past 4-5 months I have managed to get to a point where my IBS is so much more manageable. There is something in particular that still causes me problems- I have realised that for 2-3 days before my period starts each month, I am constipated and the noises in my gut (which plagued me every day before I started following Heather's advice, but which in general now only happen when I know I've eaten something I shouldn't) start up. I feel heavy and bloated during these few days. Once my period starts, the horrible period pain cramps are normally accompanied by diarrhea on the first day or two (even pre-IBS that was the case), which in some ways is a relief! Does anyone have any advice as to what to change during the days to alleviate the symptoms of constipation + bloating + gas/noises?
For info: My normal diet these days is rice cereal with soy milk + peppermint tea for breakfast, white bread with tuna or chicken and salad + banana at lunch, then rice/pasta/potatoes with fish/chicken and veg for evening meal. Also: I take 10g of Polykarara (a soluble fibre supplement) before each of those meals. I am no longer taking any other tablets (previously peppermint oil capsules, and Debridat/Mebeverine-type antispasmodic). Also, I have always suffered with painful periods, including nausea + dizziness + diarrhea (even pre-IBS) on the first 1-2 days.
Any words of wisdom would be much appreciated...

Hi - I have had the same type of experience, because hormonal fluctuations can wreak havoc with IBS, even if you're stable. You can try something like birth control pills to stabilize your hormones.
Or, what worked for me, was regular yoga practice. Regular exercise in general stopped cold the IBS flares I'd have with my period. Yoga in particular completely alleviated this issue - and the weird thing is that has held steady even if I lapse in my yoga practice.
It didn't address the actual menstrual cramps, unfortunately, at least not by much. But it sure did stop the IBS flares on top of everything else, and that has been a big deal.
