Hi Heather,

I was wondering if you made the Tummy Tamers using veggie caps? I am Vegan and I do not want to consume the gelatin. I have heard really amazing things about this and I would really like to take these. Is there an alternative you could recommend for me that would be just as effective?

thanks so much!

Ava

Hi Ava,

All of our products are vegan, kosher and certified organic except the peppermint oil caps. This is because of the enteric coating and the gelatin in the capsules.

The gelatin is of animal origin and the exact source varies. It can be beef, pork, or fish, or any combination there of. It cannot be guaranteed that the gelatin is pork free, which is why we cannot have it kosher certified.

To date, a vegan gel cap hasn't been formulated that can withstand the enteric coating or the peppermint oil itself. The enteric coating is necessary to prevent the peppermint oil from being released in the stomach where it can cause heartburn.

As soon as someone formulates a vegan gel cap we can use with the enteric coating and peppermint oil (and manufacturers have been striving for this for quite a few years), we will switch in a heartbeat! Then we will be able to get them organic and kosher certified.

We have been in contact with several research and development firms in this field and they know there is a huge demand, and they hope to have vegan, organic enteric coated gel caps available sometime soon if the testing goes well.

Best,
Heather

and keep saying they are close. I don't actually eat any red meat but I will make an exception for gelatin in things like medications because it's just a necessity for me. But it is still something that makes me unhappy.

Best,
H

It is an ongoing frustration for me. The bigger problem is that across the market, there just isn't enough of a demand for vegan/organic/kosher gel caps. The R & D required to develop this is too costly and time consuming for most companies to consider it worthwhile, so they aren't pursuing it. I've pushed, but the technical difficulties make this a difficult project, and there isn't the interest out there.

Wish I had better news on this. If someone does develop this I'd switch the moment I knew there no quality control issues, and I wouldn't look back.

Best,
Heather
