IBS Friendly Protein Powders Exist?

Hey All,

I've been looking long and hard for an IBS friendly protein powder but it seems that all the rice protein powders I've encountered are made from brown rice. There's hemp protein but that has high amounts of insoluber fiber. There's pea protein but peas are on Heather's insoluber fiber list. I'm unclear if whey protein isolate is just as bad as whey protein so I haven't gone that route. Lastly I've tried soy protein but it doesn't sit well with me.

I'm looking for a protein powder for after my workout but haven't found any that are IBS friendly. Has anybody had any luck in finding an IBS friendly protein powder.

Thanks in advance!

Whey protein isolate is filtered to remove the lactose, fat and carbs. You might be able to use it. However some individuals have problems with milk proteins. It is something you will have to experiment with to see if it works for you as Heather and some other sources suggest that it can be a problem for some people.

If you decide to try make sure to check the ingredients list because frequently this supplement contains artificial sweeteners and other ingredients particularly if the product is flavored.

As you say pea protein is high in insoluble fiber. Some people claim that because things like pea and rice protein supplements are finely ground it isn't an IBS trigger. Many of us have found that no matter how fine insoluble fiber is ground it is still a problem. For example, a body builder who use to frequent this board found pea or rice protein gave him no end of problems. Furthermore there isn't any clinical evidence to support the notion that finely ground insoluble fibre less of a trigger. Pea protein is something you will have to experiment with too.

Try the rice or pea powder. If they're protein supplements they likely have much of the fiber removed, or what's left is so finely processed it's unlikely to bother you. I'd start with a low dose and increase gradually to see how you tolerate things.

Anything with whey in it is dairy - I'd avoid it.

Best,
Heather

Thank you Syl, thank you Heather for responding. After looking around I think I'm going to try this one http://www.nutribiotic.com/organic-rice-protein-plain-21oz.html

And take it slow as Heather suggested.

Did you notice that the rice protein powder that you provided the link to is made from "whole grain sprouted brown rice"?

Yup practically all rice protein powder I've encountered are made from brown rice but according to Heather's previous post, they should have most of the fiber removed. Should I not try this one?

I believe she said they "... they likely have much of the fiber removed". I check with a couple of manufacturers of rice protein powder about this fact about a couple of years ago. They germinated the brown rice, enzymatically treated and dried it and then they ground it into a powder. They didn't extract the insoluble fiber. It likely depends on the manufacturer. It might be worthwhile contacting the manufacturer and asking them if they remove the insoluble fiber and if the product is 100% protein only.

It says right on the label of the one linked to that it is 80% protein.

And it says < 1 gr / 40 grams of fiber which suggest that is about 3% dietary fiber. I wonder what the remaining 17%is composed of given the enzymes separates the carbs from the proteins so they can be removed.

This is a new one I had recommended to me and have just ordered. I have gastroparesis and IBS-C and was told this one would be safe.

I took a look at the ingredients and it has pea protein isolate and brown rice protein concentrate. As a person with IBS-D, not sure if I should take this: http://www.vitacost.com/PlantFusion-Multi-Source-Plant-Protein#IngredientFacts

the artichoke extract contains inulin. A rapidly fermenting soluble fiber known to produce gas and exacerbate IBS symptoms.

I don't know if it helps but I too wanted to find a protein powder I could use after a workout. I found Gensoy Soy Protein shake in Vanilla. So far I have been ok taking it. You'll have to check out the ingredients to make sure you could do it too. It has 14g of protein in one shake.

my experience:

Apparently whey isolate is low on lactose. didn't work for me.

Egg white protein powder works but can taste ghastly so I suggest mixing it with water and herbs in a food processor and then frying it in a tiny bit of oil, basically making an egg white omlette. Doesn't taste bad at all.

But won't ever function well as a protein shake for me, although others have been successful with mixing it with a banana or orange juice, which apparently masks the taste. The trick is to do it in a blender or mixer otherwise it won't blend well at all.

now: stable through EFI+FODMAP dieting (no lactose/no fructose/some fructans and some polyols)

before: IBS-D(pseudo-diarrhoea), bloating, often unbearable pain esp from too much fat: Apr 2007- Dec 2010

[I've tried VSL#3 -> I could tolerate v good amounts of IF (even with less SF), it worked great (but overall I find it too expensive)]
