I love these things. They don't bother my tummy, believe it or not (I only eat one), and I'm wondering if I missing something?

The brand is Pagoda, they're frozen, white meat chicken egg rolls, and here are the ingredients: cabbage, celery, white chicken meat, carrots, onions, texturized soy flour, modified food starch, sesame seed-flavored oil, hydrolized soy protein, salt, roasted garlic base, natural flavoring, cornstarch, canola oil, sesame oil, ginger, spices, onions, and all kinds of sulphates (yum). They don't appear to be deep-fried, but I can't tell. They contain (for 1 egg roll) 1.5g. saturated fat and 160 calories.

Anyone?

I can eat the NO Name brand egg rolls from Independent Grocers. They are the vegtable ones. I just throw them in the oven and they come out nice and crispy. I dip them in President Choice (same store as rolls) plum sauce. I eat 2 of them because they are really good.I can also eat Spring Rolls from M&M's meat shop. Sue

Or the total number of fat grams (not just sat fat)? What matters here is how much of the calorie content in the rolls is from fat. If they've been deep fried, that percentage will be really high. If they're just baked it will be very low. My guess is they're baked since you're eating them without problem. I used to get a shrimp version of baked egg rolls at a Chinese market and they were fabulous. Low fat, got all crispy and golden in the oven, and never bothered me at all.

Six grams of Total Fat, or 10% of daily value. Is that our 25% limit? I am SOOOO bad at this stuff. I know others have tried fat calculations in this board, and it always went right over my head. Is that 25%? I can't tell! HELP.

Oooh, Shelly, how 'bout sharing that recipe, Girlfriend?!?

Do you use phylo dough for the wrapping? And you bake them, so there should no fat. You said they're "pretty good." How good is "pretty good" -- on a scale of 1-10, 10 being addictive, 1 being garbage food, where are you?

Bevrs,
I would have to put the homemade eggrolls at a 7-8. I will have to look for my recipe. I lived in hawaii for 4 years and ate that kind of thing all the time. My husband and two sons willingly eat these eggrolls and my sons can be picky. I will look for the recipe and get it posted for you.

Six grams of fat equals 54 fat calories (because fats have 9 calories per gram). What you care about is how much of the calories in these egg rolls comes from fat. So - what is the total calorie count per egg roll? Then look at the calorie count from fat per egg roll. That is the number you want to be under 25% or so.

Example - the egg roll has 300 calories. 54 of those calories are from fat. That's only 1/6th the total calorie count, or less than 20%, so no problem. But if that eggroll only has 100 calories, and 54 are from fat, that means more than half of that eggroll is pure fat. Too much!

As a really general rule, try to keep your fat calories to less than 100 per snack, and less than 200 per meal. That's about 1 tablespoon of fat for those 100 calories. If you actually measure out 1 T of oil, you'll see that that's a pretty good amount, and you don't want to eat more than that all at once. This is a really general rule, okay? Things will vary by how much you're eating, how much soluble fiber, etc. But IN GENERAL, if the fat calories are over 100 per serving for the label you're reading, that's too much.

Girlfriend, this is SOOO not easy! You're good at it -- obviously you've had some experience, eh?

Okay, you take that 300 calorie figure and divide it by 54 (the fat calories) to get 18%, is that right? (Oh, I can just see Kandee right now -- wondering how I ever graduated high school!)

So, okay, one egg roll has 160 calories and 6 grams of fat. That means the percentage of fat in that one egg roll is 34%, right? Do I finally have it? (Heather, you must go through the grocery store with a list in one hand and a calculator in the other!)

Anyone out there want 10 boxes of egg rolls?

Bev - Check your label more closely. All USA food labels have to give the number of calories and the number of fat calories. You don't even need to look at fat grams, and calculate the calories from that. The label will already say.

So, you're really just taking the total calories divided by fat calories. When I do this in my head (and yeah, I've been doing it for a while ) I round off all the numbers. Your egg rolls numbers of 160 calories and and 54 fat calories I'd automatically round to 150 and 50. So, dividing 150 by 50 in your head is easy, and you get 1/3, or 33%.

That's definitely the max you'd ever want for fat, and I'd have some extra soluble fiber with the rolls. No need to toss them out, just have with some steamed rice, or a rice noodle dish, etc.

Not rocket science, really. Good info for everyone to learn. But I have to admit to being real lazy and JUST knowing how much total fat I can have at any one time so not to set myself up for an attack. (I'm not that fond of grocery stores to spend my entire day in them calculating fat calories in each food I buy.)

I'm lazy and count total fat not fat calories. I know that for me, I HAVE to keep a meal's fat total to no more than around 6 grams. At 10 it's pushing it. A snack..1-3. Works for me so that's what I use.

In the case of your egg rolls, one would be enough. The rest would be non-fat foods, like lots of rice.

I'm with you, Val. Heather's just incredible. My hubby has a little tiny calculator with a side pocket in the case. I'm gonna steal it from him, then use the side pocket for my grocery list. As I go down the aisles, I'm just gonna compute all the stuff I need -- and nothing gets put in the basket unless it's under 25%.

I thought this was a recent post, but I see it's a few years old. I haven't eaten these things in AGES! But thanks for the reminder, 'cause I just might have to get some again; they're DELICIOUS!

Did you read Heather's original responding post? She explains the fat content, as follows:

Quote:

Did that answer your question?

As for the shrimp, I can't answer because I wouldn't TOUCH the stuff. I HATE shrimp!

"Threads" are strings of posts under one subject heading.

These questions and answers get moved around so that the current posts are first and the older ones are last. The highlighted posts are those that have current responses.

What do we delete? Nothing, unless you change your mind about a post you made, then you can go back into it, click "edit," then "delete". But you can only delete your own posts, no one else's.

You're doin' fine, JB. It's a lot to learn.

The eggrolls I bought say 70 calories. Calories from fat is 15. The total fat is 2. This is not enough right. I think I also need something else right? And I think this is too much fat for the number of calories because I multiply 15x9=135. I am confused. And thanks for all the clearing-up. JB

I believe you would multiply the 2 grams of fat by 9. That would give you 18. Then you take the 70 calories and divide by 18 and multiply times 100. That should give you 26%.

I think that's how to do the math - if I'm wrong, someone please correct me!

When the label says "Calories from fat 15" then that's what you use to determine the percentage. Take the calories from fat, and divide by total calories.

For this example: 15 / 70 * 100 = 21%

That means the fat intake for this is 21% of the total calories, which is a safe amount. As Heather posts on How to Eat for IBS "Keep your fat intake to 20% - 25% of your total calories".

Hope that helps clear things up, as for times when that "Calories from fat" amount is not shown, I'm not sure what the calculation is.

If I'm totally wrong on this please someone tell me! I've been following this..
Thanks, Kat

What kind of eggrolls did you buy, JB?

Michelle's got it figured out right. 26% is only 1% over our limit, so I would go for it. Serve some rice with it, which would cut down on the fat percentage of the entire meal. Chow down!

Fats have 9 calories per gram. You multiply that by the number of grams of fat, which in this case is 2.
