1 cup of milk?

Ok guys, I take a foods class, and a few days ago we learned about milk. It said that even lactose intolerant people should be able to tolerate at least one cup of milk, and in the one cup in 30% of your DV (Daily Value) for calcium, and 25% of your DV for phophorus (which combine to make teeth and bones stronger), so I was thinking that maybe, after a meal, I could try having a cup of milk? How do you think that will turn out?

I can tell you how it would turn out for me -- I'd be doubled over with my head in the toilet and my butt in the chamber pot!

No thanks.

I wouldn't be able to do it.

Did you ask how well you'll be able to tolerate the whey & casein along with the lactose?

I'm not lactose intol., but milk causes C for me. My 9 year old is back to a dairy free diet for the same reason. Milk seems to be a bad idea to me - even one cup.

I'd have my head in the trash can and my butt on the toilet -- for about 6 hours!!! It's not just about the lactose..... Take a supplement - eat some other calcium rich foods -- milk is not the only thing with calcium. Maybe this teacher works for the dairy people - lol (just a joke) - NOTHING could make me drink a glass of milk.

I don't know whether I'm lactose intolerant - I don't get instant D after milk, but it is THE WORST thing for making me C - guaranteed. Also get awful wind (gas) and catarrh from just a glass of milk. The most I could tolerate on a daily basis is about one chocolate from a box after a high soluble fibre meal. If I eat choccy, it tends to be the dark stuff - no dairy for me.

Although calcium levels are high in milk, it's not that easily absorbed by the body - it's a myth (good PR by the dairy industry) that this is the best form of calcium. Do a bit of research on milk on the web - you'll see that it's a highly controversial food. A huge proportion of the world's population is TOTALLY intolerant to milk and it's linked to all kinds of diseases. That's not even thinking about the antibiotics and other drugs that is fed to these milk producing animals.

If you think about it, milk is totally unnatural for us humans. No other species on this planet takes milk (even from it's own mother) beyond infancy - how many of us want our children to grow up to be good strong healthy cows! lol

I'm sure Heather has referred to the myth of dairy goodness in her 1st Year IBS book...

I too am not lactose intol. but unlike you don't notice a difference in my "C". In fact, don't notice any ill affects at all. I DON'T consume milk mainly because of the XO factor and get my calcium from supplements and other food sources. Have to admit however to cheating on the dairy now and then but when I do it is ONLY with a little non-fat organic plain yogurt or non-fat cottage cheese as those are the safest and most beneficial. Since I can't do soy, and the rice knock-offs are to high in fat I'm getting none, and I mean none of any dairy flavored foods and boy there are times I miss those. The rice/almond/oat beverages don't always cut it with me.

I agree with Mags, there's more in milk that bothers people with IBS than just lactose. Also, having been lactose intolerant myself for many years, I can tell you that I could never have had a whole glass of milk, even before developing IBS. People have varying tolerances to lactose, so some can have a bunch and others can't even tolerate trace amounts. So in other words, it depends on your body. Honestly, I wouldn't try it if I were you. You can get soy and rice milks that are fortified so they have just as much calcium as a glass of dairy milk. But it's your choice!

THIS IN AN AMENDMENT TO MY PRIVIOUS POST…………..HERE I AM LOOKING AT IT MORE IN LINE WITH YOU, PEACHES, A VERY YOUNG WOMAN WHO HAS LOTS OF GROWING LEFT TO DO AND WHO NEEDS ALL THE NUTRIENTS YOU CAN GET TO AVOID DEFICIENCIES AS YOU GET OLDER………..

Peaches,

Having taught HS foods classes, (about million years ago, or so it seems) and now looking at your bio and seeing you're still in HS, I can tell you that one reason we Home Ec teachers have pushed milk is because young women are so highly deficient in calcium, and have always been avoiding it because they think it makes them fat. In fact the latest I read was that LESS than 20% of ALL American women consume ENOUGH calcium. (Since you're taking a foods class I don't have to reiterate why you need adequate amounts of calcium daily.)

But, you have a special problem….It's called IBS. Your teacher may not know much about IBS. Milk may be a trigger food for you but you'll only know if you try it. Even if you CAN tolerate a little of it, don't push it and think you can drink the recommended 3-4 glasses a day. You can't. It's more likely you can have it only once and a while. If you want to wow your teacher, do your own personal research on other foods containing calcium and then calculate how much of them daily you would need to equal the calcium you'd get from milk. Don't forget to look at the foods you are consuming now, which may be calcium enriched, like soy or rice milk/cheese, dried cereals, etc.

But, like the title I made to this post says, if it boils down to being out with your friends at a fast food place, and they are all having cokes and you don't want to look like a dork by not ordering one too, get milk instead………….maybe you'll start something!

A teacher's 2 cents………………….Kandee

I'm going to take hits for this I KNOW, and I still don't advocate drinking milk as a regular practice, UNLESS, you have your own dairy cow, (or better yet, your own milk goat), know what it's fed, conduct your own safe milking practices, and consume it in it's raw state immediately.

LOL Kandee! Well I was reading some of your posts and you guys were talking about glasses of milk? I just meant a measuring cup full maybe? I dunno lol. I can tolerate it fine if I have lots of fiber before. That, combined with vitamins, gives me about 75% of the DV for the day. Maybe I'm just weird!! lol

I think Pacific brand makes them, and Rice Dream as well. They have no added oils, and are virtually fat free. There's also oat milk, which should be low fat as well.

OOOps.....what I meant to say was that the rice/soy CHEESES had to much fat for me. (This head cold/cough I've had for going on 2 weeks now has caused brain fog so I'm not always thinking straight.)

I use all of the rice/oat/almond beverages, reg. and fat free with no problem. They are ok, not as good as the soy ones (which I CAN'T have) or low fat milk, but ok for things like cereal and cooking.

Sorry for the accidental exclusion of the word cheese........My mistake.

Kandee less than 20% American women consume too little calcium? Did I read it right?

That is scary and what these girls don't know is dark soda depletes their calcium intake. Hopefully the schools are teaching this, but kids always feel nothing bad will happen to me, so to teach them how bad soda is will be a helpless cause.

I take two calcium pills a day along with drinking enriched soy milk. I know I'm getting enough calcium in a day. If not let me know Kandee.

Thanks for alll the info. you share on the board - I've learned alot from you.

Sorry to report Barbara, but you're right. In my group of friends, only my friend Rachel and I drink water. All of my other friends drink pop, and so does practically everyone else at my school. Sometimes I want just ONE root beer. Just to remember the taste. That was my favorite pop before diagnosed. Maybe I'll just drink half of one on a day when I'm home. Maybe half won't hurt since it's caffeine free, ya know? Ok, maybe just 1/4 lol. We'lll see when I get there....

Every once in awhile I crave soda and regret it every time. I love a large glass of with water with a slice of lemon. As a grown up my friends still order soda when going out. My sister-n-law is the worse - she will drink at least 3 glasses of diet pepsi with her meal.

I agree - milk is for baby cows -- which have 4 stomachs to help them digest it -- we have only one (and for us IBS folks -- one highly sensitives digestive tract at that!). There are so many other options that are easier on our tummies.

Barbara, are you menopausal? Close to menopause? I'm not being nosy, just concerned. It's really important to get enough calcium as we age. You say you take 2 calcium pills a day -- how much calcium is in each? My doctor really drummed this into me -- BIG time -- when I started menopause, writing it on a slip of paper for me, which I've kept all these years: 1,200mg. calcium per day plus "D". Every time I visit the doctor, after the nurse takes my blood pressure, that's the first question she asks me: "Are you taking in 1,200mg. calcium a day, DAH-LING?"

I take Calcium plus D - two tablets which equal 635mg. I drink Enriched soy milk and that an 8 oz glass provides 30% calcium needs for the day. Is that enough?

I also lift free weights three times a week, which is suppose to help with bone strength.

I'm 36 and I think I may be going into perimenopause already. I do see my Gyn. on the 20th for the awful yearly exam and I plan to talk to her about my symtoms.

Your gyn can answer your questions MUCH better than I. I was 38 when I had my surgery which forced me into an early menopause, requiring a strict daily calcium supplement, so my situation is different from yours.

As I got older, I found that I had to eat less, such that, by now, it's impossible for me to consume enough calcium from my food; supplements are the only answer for me. That may happen to you as you get older, maybe not.

Do each of your calcium pills contain 635mg. or is that the total for BOTH? If it's the total for both, you can do better. Check the labels -- I got a huge supply at Safeway on one of their specials, and I made sure that EACH capsule contained 600mg. A lot of times I don't have any soy milk products, so I have to depend on the supplements. That doesn't appear to be your case, however.

It's good that you are on top of all this, Barbara. By the time you're 50 or 60 you'll be glad you began taking action at 36.

Hi Barb, and all,

Yes there are some scary statistics out there. Unfortunately….calcium and iron seem to be the two big deficiencies in female adolescents.

You're right about the dark sodas being the enemy of calcium. The culprit in dark colored sodas is phosphoric acid. It sucks up the calcium and magnesium like a sponge. A wiser choice is to pick a clear soda, but then all of the common ones use high fructose corn syrup as the sweetener, not to mention the carbonation factor, which goes against most of us with IBS. If you want to see something really SCARY take and old tooth, like a saved baby tooth. Put it in a glass of dark colored soda and leave it over night. The next day it will be GONE. I'm serious. It's no wonder you can clean the acid off your car battery by just pouring a coke over it!!!

Another thing about calcium and teens. 45% of your bone mass is formed while you are a teenager. Think of what the girls are setting themselves up for in later years by currently drinking only diet sodas to stay thin?

Peaches,……a Root Beer isn't necessarily a bad choice…………..Try and find a NATURAL one, one that doesn't use phosphoric acid. If you can tolerate the bubble factor you're fine having one now and then.

And Barb, It is my belief if all adults your age get at least 1,000 mgs of calcium a day from all sources they are fine. It's the teens and oldies, (like myself) that need between 1,200 to 1,500 mg. BTW, spinach and broccoli and white beans, besides tofu and enriched products are good non-dairy sources.

Anyone can be wise on nutrition thanks to the net. There are all sorts of great FREE health e-newsletters out there if you want to subscribe to them. HealthWorldOnline is a good one to start with: http://www.healthy.net/ You can pick and choose from many categories.

Barbara, Thanks for the compliment but I'm afraid I'm out of the loop, so to speak. I'm a fickle Home Economist depending on where my interests lay at any one time. (I recently spent nearly 5 years studying the evolution of the sexes, and that is certainly more social anthropology than human ecology.) If I stick around here I guess I better remember where I read this or that so I can document my statements. I'm a periodicals junky and I'm afraid they are EVERYWHERE………….workroom, bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, car, purse, totes. When I can grab a free minute, I'll read!

(BEV?..... come organize ME?)

There IS but it's as hard as hen's teeth to find. I think it's white with blue lettering instead of blue with white lettering.

I you really like one brand, you can likely order a case of it on line (12 to a case, I think). Since it's asceptic packaged it will have a long shelf life.

Anyone tried Yu yet? I'm told it's great. It's made from basmati rice.
