Shopping for IBS on a budget

I am new to the boards. I have Heather's book and have been reading the recipes on the exchange board and they sound great. The only problem I have is that I am on a very tight budget for my groceries and so many of the items needed for the recipes are pricey. Combine that with having two very picky little boys to cook for and I just don't know where to start. Any advise for me?

Welcome, I know about a budget, a lot of the staple fibers, pasta, potatoes and rice are farely inexpensive, especially if you can shop at an Aldi's, or Big Lots, or Dollar Store, you can get lots of rice and pasta cheap. I get a lot of chicken broth, low fat, to add to my rice which I can also find at my "budget stores" as I call them. Most dollar stores and other stores also have the "safe" dry cereals A LOT cheaper than grocery stores, like Honeycombs, Rice Chex, Corn Pops, As for the milk it is quite pricey, but I only use it to cook with or in my cereal. I put non-dairy no fat creamer in my tea. I also have, in the past froze cheese, I know you're not supposed to, but I haven't found soy cheese yet, I'm headed to a local health food store, but I'm going to ask them if I can freeze it, does anyone know if you can? That way you could buy a larger quantity and freeze it. I hope this helps.

Thank you cjc,

I will use some of your ideas. I guess when you are first starting out there seems like there is so much to change it gets a little overwhelming. I think what I am starting to understand is that you just have to keep it simple which is ironic because until you are used to them the simple foods take more time to prepare and require more thought. Thanks again for your ideas.

Hi - You'll get lots of good ideas from others here, I'm sure, and if you search the board you'll find past posts on this as well. Look for the ones by folks in college - they have terrific budget ideas. And one thing that just helps to keep in mind is that you're NOT buying some foods you used to (like red meats, dairy, coffee, soda pop, fast food) so that gives you some cash for IBS alternatives.

You know, guys, Heather makes a very good point here. How much were we spending at Starbuck's? Wolf's? The local espresso stand? Buying only the best, freshly ground coffee beans -- mocha java here -- that wasn't cheap for me!

Or how about my bottle of Jack? $40, thank you very much!

And that favorite New York cheddar? I liked the aged kind -- Vermont white -- BIG BUCKS!

And we didn't think twice about spending our money on all that -- it's just what we did!

Now, instead of blowing it on all that bad stuff, we spend it wisely on just the good stuff. Makes a lot of sense!
