I'm 13 weeks pregnant and this is my first bout with ibs since I've become pregnant. I've been feeling great as of today. I had some really bad abdominal spasms this morning. I took some Mylanta liquid (since my ob said it was safe to take) and I've been fine since I took it, but I'm wondering if I should call my ob and let her know that I've been having these pains even though they've subsided. Thanks!

They have stopped luckily . I don't have any peppermint tea, but I do have some ginger tea and I've been drinking that and seems to be helping as well. Thanks!

that might help a bit here http://www.helpforibs.com/messageboards/ubbthreads/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Board=diet&Number=231535&page=0&view=expanded&sb=5&o=&fpart=1
The glossary it sends you to is really great.

both peppermint and ginger teas are safe in pregnancy and very helpful for spasms. The mint is probably better for pain, the ginger better for nausea. You can also brew them together.

While herbal teas are generally safe in small amounts, don't go overboard during pregnancy...
Babycenter link
BUT, definitely avoid all peppermint towards the end of your pregnancy and also while you're breastfeeding; it causes a decrease in milk supply!!

aperson, it can be very hard to differentiate between, say, gastrointestinal cramping and uterine cramping. Abdominal cramping may be a sign of a problem with the pregnancy, though in this case it's probably not. Jhuggs meant for the original poster to call her Ob-Gyn, not her regular doctor. Someone with IBS who is not pregnant does not need to call their doctor every time they have a twinge or cramp or spasm.

You're welcome. and actually, you might do some research. I thought about it more after I posted last, and I swear I was told to avoid peppermint entirely because it's a smooth muscle relaxer, and can inadvertently relax the muscles of the uterus. This is obviously bad when you're pregnant. In addition, pregnant women are MUCH more susceptible to heartburn because hormones relax the muscles of the esophagus. As you know, peppermint exascerbates heartburn. So I'd avoid it if possible, just to be safe!
