So I have an ulcer. And I am border-line anemic.

I got the ulcer from the meds I'm taking...and from stress.

I HATE medicines! I want to crawl away right now. My hubby is a wreck! I'm just SO SICK! Sinus and bronchitus, a yeast infection for 2 months now (no sugar in this girl's diet for weeks now...or yeast!), I have bleeding internal hemmorhoids, IBS, the list doesn't end! HELP!

I want so badly to be healthy! G-d should just help me!

Everything happens for a reason...and I know that...so I won't fall into despair. G-d must think I'm pretty special if He knows I can handle all of this, right?

I love each and every person on this board....thank you for your endless support and hugs!

I hope everyone had a terrific holiday!

Please stay healthy and happy!

*hugs* and happy Friday!

Ruchie

P.S. Nope, no iron supplements.....and nope, it wasn't the antibiotics causing the probs...and nope, it's not colitis. Just to clear that up! Thanks for caring everyone!!!!!!!

P.P.S. If you have ANY ulcer advice...bring it on...I'm new at this!! Thanks!

Thank you SO MUCH for your responses....you're WONDERFUL!

I moved this post here cause I thought the other post was maybe getting too long...I guess that was silly! I didn't realize it would be so confusing...

The doc. kept me on the meds I'm on...I guess it doesn't matter now that the damage has been done? I dunno...

I hope you had a FANTASTIC holiday! I'll def. keep you posted!

*hugs*

Ruchie, glad to hear you have an answer at least.
I have a book by Dr John Briffa, a doctor in London with a special interest in immunology and nutrition. He says:

Although for many years ulcers were thought to be caused by stress or an excess of fatty foods, in fact, many ulcers seem to be caused by a bacterium known as 'Helicobacter pylori', and the possibility of this should be discussed with your doctor.

The lining of the gut is shielded from potentially damaging digestive secretions by a coating of protective mucus. An ulcer is a raw area in the wall of the intestine where this protective mechanism has broken down.

There is a great deal you can do to help healing through your diet. All spicy foods/irritants/acid forming foods should be avoided. A high fibre diet will help to prevent ulcers recurring so choose more gentle forms of fibre such as oats, brown rice, fruits and veggies.

Cabbage juice (yuk!) is very effective at healing ulcers. You'll need a juicer to make this, and may feel great relief within days - no need to down lots of it - just sip the juice regularly through the day, and it can be made quite diluted if you don't like the taste.

Vitamin A can be beneficial in healing ulcers, as it enhances tissue healing (discuss with your doctor if you have any history of kidney stones/problems). Don't take more than 10,000IU a day if you're pregant or planning pregnancy.

Zinc promotes tissue healing.

DGL (Deglycyrrhizinated licorice) is a compound which has been shown to be about as effecive as conventional drugs in healing ulcers. Take doses 15 minutes before meals and 1-2 hours before bedtime.

Your diet should be very gentle until the ulcer is healed - puree, mash and well cook your food. (Basically, the IBS diet looks very good for ulcer healing too!)

Hope some of this helps and you're feeling better soon.
Sorry for this v long post!

Ulcers and milk -
in the past it was thought that drinking milk was a good way to relieve the discomfort of an ulcer. NO NO NO! Evidence now suggests that milk actually encourages Helicobacter pylori (the bacterium now believed to be a major cause of ulcers). Just another reason to avoid dairy if you're not already.
All the best.

Ruchie,
Did your Dr put you on anything for the ulcers?
Give you anything for the Hemmorhoids?
What meds caused the ulcer?
Any stress reduction strategies that you are using?
I'm sorry you are having such a hard time. I have to say though, that as unpleasant as ulcers can be, I'm glad it wasn't something more serious.
Keep us posted.

Oh my, I feel so sorry for you. An ulcer is no fun. You said it was from meds and stress. Were you tested for H.Pylori as well? The only good thing about an ulcer is that it can be healed....but it takes time.

As far as I know the diet for ulcers is pretty bland....rice and bananas (sound familiar?) and not much unlike the IBS one. As to the anemia what did your doc
suggest?

Please be very gentle with yourself. Be as nice and considerate to yourself as you are everyone else here. Not only does the "power that be" know your are special but we all here do as well.......

Here's wishing you a better New Year in '04.....time to ring out the old and bring in the new....a new and healthy year for you!!!!!!

Hi Ruchie- I am sending prayers your way! My heart just went out to you when I read the list of all
you are dealing with. You seem to be doing a great job of trying to stay positive and get information
to help yourself, though I completely understand at times your wanting to 'crawl away' somewhere.
If I come across any good research on ulcers I'll be sure to send it to you. Till then, I'll continue to pray for your healing. I hope 2004 brings you good health and happiness! Linda

Ruchie,
I also don't know anything about ulcers. I'm sure someone else does, but I want to tell you that you are a very special girl. You are young and beautiful, and truly you must be the strongest person I've had the pleasure of meeting. Don't ever change, keep your great attitue, Ruchie! I can't imagine what you must be going through, but keep on keeping on, because there is no doubt in my mind that you are strong enough to handle it all. Just take care of yourself, and be sure to put yourself first in these times of stress. I hope your poor husband is just as strong as you are, and I hope that you can lean on each other in times of need so that you can both pull through unscathed, together. Yes, sometimes, our toughest times are our greates blessings. So, please enjoy your holidays!

Wow, thank you so much! I'm speechless...

My husband is having a hard time. He thought I was getting better...and then I come home with news of an ulcer! I've never seen him the way he was Friday afternoon.......he was more upset with the news than I was! He married a beautiful, healthy woman....the poor man (in the midst of all of this I've gained about 20lbs. since our wedding day!)

I just keep reminding myself over and over...I can be depressed and despair or rise above and stay positive. Everything in life is a choice......and I chose to stay positive! I'm not going to let my (temorary, G-d willing!), state of yuck get me down if I can help it....my bod might not be doing it's job right--but I still can!

I have to say everyone on this board and your positive reassurance that I'm strong and positive keeps me strong and positive! I'm so fortunate to have all of you in my life....

Thank you again! Happy holidays and good to health to you and your family!!!!

Love,
Ruchie

Bev....

I wish I could give you a hug!!!! You are SO SUPPORTIVE and my biggest fan (except for my hubby of course)

I'm sorry I didn't write back sooner...my computer shut me of while I was writing you last night (I don't use the computer Fri. night and Sat. until sundown because of Shabbos). Please forgive me!!!

My doc. never told me what kind of ulcer it is...how he knows I have one....NOTHING! I'm beginning to get REALLY fed up with allopathic docs!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He told me on Friday that he wouldn't be able to always spend so much time answering my questions.....he gave me FIVE MINS. of his time for questions....he forgot to write down instructions for the ulcer meds he gave me...........GRRR!!!!!

I've been to doctor after doctor the past year--my mom thinks I'm a hypochondriac because I go to so many docs. I just want a doctor who will answer my questions. I'm tired of taking meds without knowing why I'm taking them. I'm tired of doctors that fill up their offices for 20-30 minute slots and don't like answering questions. This doctor I'm going to now said I'm a difficult case. Most people come in for an ulcer...or upper respiratory probs...or thyroid probs. TOO BAD! Just because I'm a difficult case doesn't mean he should dole out the meds......on the contrary! He should get to know his patient (me in this case!) and make time to answer questions!

My best friend is in med school right now. She told me a story about a man in his 70's or 80's who began getting lethargic when he was swam. This man was a competitive swimmer all his life. His doc said it was old age. He wasn't so sure....so he called his friend, a competitive swimmer friend who had become an MD., and his friend told him to go to a new doc and have a battery of tests run because he thought it was his heart. Sure enough...the doctor knew his patient and if the man hadn't gone to another doc for tests he would've died...he needed a triple bypass pronto! (Sorry if I botched this story and it's confusing to read!)

WHEW! That was a longie!

So, I feel like the only way I can get better is to go to medical school and become a doc myself! Ok, maybe that's an exxageration....but I wish I could do just that! In the meantime...I'm at a loss as to what to do. It's dificult to keep spending money and changing doctors.....but I just keep telling myself something good will come of all this. If I can help just one person as a result of my current situation...it'll all be worth it in the end!!!

Thanks for listening (er, reading!)

Love,
Ruchie

Please read my re: to ANSWERS! I'm not sure what kind of ulcer I have My doc isn't interested in all of my questions...

He isn't doing anything for the anemia right now either. I think you said you are/were anemic? If you have any suggestions, let me know!

I just wish I knew how to relax better. It's especially difficult right now because I'm so worried about my health and money! If you have any suggestions in that department, I'm all ears!

You know, you're right...I DO need to be gentle with myself. I'm going through a lot...I'm in a new town where I don't know so many ppl (my hubby and I just moved here about 4 months ago....and since I've been so sick I haven't met too many ppl yet!). Maybe I should cut myself slack If I only I knew what to do to do just that?

I'll def. give it some thought....what you said really hit home!

Thanks again Kandee....I'm sending lots of hugs and thank -yous your way!

My doc. put me on AcipHex 20mg.

He gave me a cream for the hemmorhoids (I asked for it!) and told me to take fibercon (I'm taking Benefiber cause it works for me!)

He didn't specify which meds caused it. I'm on his whole regimen of meds.......he likes to dole em' out. I'm on clarinex and singulair for allergies, flonase (a steroid nasal spray) and Astelin (another nasal spray...I was on Afrin too), Amoxicillin, pulmicort 4 puffs twice a day (I'm not taking it at the moment because my asthma seems under control and those meds are dangerous!), and that's it.

He didn't mention much about diet either. No spicy foods, no alcohol and no caffeine (I don't do any of the above anyway!) I did some research on my own....turns out you aren't supposed to eat heavy foods either!

He didn't mention anything about reducing stress. Any ideas? I did do Mike's hypno tapes a while back.....I'll have to ask ShawnEric if I can start them again! In the meantime...any ideas would be great!

Thank you so much for responding and for your caring and concern...with this board to help me get through...I'm sure I'll be ok!

Hope all is well with you...wishing you and your fam health and happiness for the holidays!

Ruchie, you sweetie you! First of all, there is nothing to apologize for! Secondly, you're right -- I am a fan.

THIRD: I'd change doctors. Don't be pushed aside by a lousy doctor who has no time for you and wants to move on to the next victim. I hate that. You're not well and you need someone who will help you. If your current doctor won't do it, then find another who will. It's important. I honestly believe that there ARE doctors out there who care. Don't give up. And don't accept less than what you deserve.

Bev.

Wow! Thank you for such an in-depth response! I can tell you really care!!!

My doc didn't tell me what kind of ulcer I have! (Read re: ANSWERS!) He DId tell me to stay away from fruits and veggies! I'm not sure what to do........

He wants me to eat bread and oats, etc...not whole grain...and to stay FAR AWAY from fruits and veggies! That's what he told me to do! The BRAT diet. (Bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast). I complained that I have a yeast infection that just won't quit (had it for 2 months now!) and I don't want any sugar or yeast in my bod. He was like "too bad! This is what you gotta eat..." (He wasn't so mean about it...just quite unsympathetic).

I would be thrilled if I could eat my pureed fruits and veggies again...and my veggie juices....and especially cabbage juice! LOL (Spinach juice is my fav though!) LOL

I decided not to take the emds the doc gave me...I'm doing aloe vera juice instead. I'm still trying to avoid yeast and sugar....I've been eating rice with Tamari sauce, potatoes, gluten free cookies, and yeast-gluten-sugar free bread! (It's not so tasty...but it should help keep my tummy and yeast infection at bay!)

Am I crazy for not taking the AcipHex he prescribed?

Thanks again for caring so much Shellsbells! I hope you nd your family have a wonderful and healthy year!

Hi Ruchie,
How many different doctors have you been to? Have your results come back about Celic?

I do agree with Bev about good doctors. There are alot of good doctors out there and my doctor included. I didn't find him right away either, plus my preference is a woman doctor and I settled on a male who I believe is younger than me. Talk about feeling old.

My suggestion is keep a dairy of your symptoms, what time of day do you feel worse, which foods make you feel worse, how you sleep, list of your meds, and so on.

Hope this is helpful and you feel better soon and get your questions answered.

Hugs to you!!!!
Barb

One more thought. Find a young doctor right out of med school, because he/she will not have a large patient load and will beable to spend more time with you.

Barb,

Thanks!

We're a no on celiac according to blood tests and my upper endoscopy. In the past year I've been to 3 GI's and 4 GP's.

What a great idea--to find someone right out of med school! How do you know if that is a person's situation? Can you ask their secretary?

I just hope my hubby is supportive of another doc....he's having a hard time through all of this! Everyday I suggest something else--I can't help it! I want to be well so badly! I've even suggested going to Chicago...Dr. Mercola, an MD. and a naturopath practices there! I feel like I should go to the best specialists...my health is worth it, right?!

Thanks Barb! I'll let you know what hubby and I decide! Wish me luck approaching him!

*hugs*

My insurance plan has a Nurse Direct progam that helps people find a doctor. If you have a program like this you can call and tell them you want a doctor who treats patients with IBS or other digestive orders. Information should also be available about age and how long they have practiced.

My GI's office recommended my current GP, because they were impressed with him and also suggested him because he was just out of med school. My GI's office feels newer doctors have more knowlege about nutrition and drugs than older ones.

My GP was the first one who suggested I keep a dairy of my food and how it effects me. This was at the same time I discovered Heather's book. I'm really happy with my doctor and he follows up with me every six months, which I've found others doctors don't. My last visit was two weeks ago and he said I'll see in six months, unless you are having problems make sure you make an appt.

Do your own research before you see a new doctor. The health clinic I use also has a list of their doctors on line and gives a brief bio of each doctor.

Good luck!!

I can't imagine the singulair, flonase, or pulmacort would cause ulcers. THe flonase and pulmacort stay pretty specific to the areas you are treating. There are lots of great stress reduction techniques. I would be happy to send you some literature on this and names of good stress reduction tapes besides the ones Micheal has. I wouild need your address which if you are comfortable you could put on my email which is jmtw60@mchsi.com. In January I am taking a mundfulness course for 8 weeks which is also supposed to be really good for stress reduction, so I will keep you posted on what I learn.
I agree that Drs can get a little carried away with meds, although I haven't found any good substitutions for allergy meds other than shots. Homeopathic hasn't worked well for my family and allergies.
I do hope you feel better soon, and will be happy to share info with you on stress management as it tends to be a big issue for me too.

HI Ruchie! Things are ok with me. The IBS diet has really helped me. No attacks since July!!
Unfortunately my husband has been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and it is not going too well
for him, but we are hopeful that using Heather's diet and consulting with docs should help. I hope
you have a great New Year's!! Take care of yourself! Linda

Finding THE Doctor You Need new

The best way to find a doctor is through reputation -- word of mouth from friends or family, someone who's been to that doctor before -- maybe even through a referral from your primary care physician. If this doctor in Chicago is someone who's been recommended, you've got a step in right direction.

It's YOUR body -- YOU have to do what's best for it.

When I discovered I had a very serious and rare condition, I was in disbelief -- total denial -- but my doctor sent me to U.C.S.F., many MANY miles away from my home. I didn't want to go, but my doctor insisted because he said he couldn't help me.

That trip to U.C.S.F. was the best trip of my life -- and in fact CHANGED my life. I wish I had made that trip 30 years earlier; it would have saved me a lot of grief and pain in my life.

GOFERIT, Ruckie!

I know this isn't your area of expertise as far as the boards go...but I'm still willing to bet you've done some research on this subject and might have some good advice to offer me! You seem so well-versed on all stomach ailments!! To bad I can't make you my doc.....if I could, I would!

In any case, if you do have any info. on ulcers or any advice for me, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Happy holidays and much priase and thanks to you and Will and your fams!

Checklist of what is reasonable to expect from a doc new

Thanks Bev! My hubby says he doesn't know what a good doc is supposed to be. He came home for lunch and I told him that everyone on the board supports my decision to find a new doc. Is it too much to expect from a doc that he should be able to answer my q's...and that he should make time to do so? What can we expect from doctors? My hubby, thank G-d, is VERY healthy and rarely goes to docs (his whole fam is this way!!!) So he doesn't know anything about the medical world and what to expect and whether or not my expectations are reasonable.

If y'all could help me make a detailed checklist from patients like yourselves...maybe I can bring it to my hubby and show him I'm not alone in my expectations?!

Thanks again...you are really super...you never tire of trying to help me Bev and everyone! I love you all!!!!!!!

Love,
Ruchie

Sorry Ruchie, but ulcers are unfamiliar territory for me. You are always so helpful to all of us, I wish I could help somehow. I will keep healthy healing thoughts for your physical and emotional body for you.

Try your best to keep your chin up through this difficult time, and know that you WILL feel good again. Magically, the day will come when you will open your eyes and feel great again. We each have an amazing will to see through tough times. Our human spirit isn't a quitter! Don't give up and remember to smile. We all care about you. Let us know how things are going okay?

I have been having more trouble with reflux lately which I attrubute to my hiatal hernia. Are there any foods you find particularly annoying to your reflux? Do you ever have trouble with swallowing? Are you O. K eating cocoa? What a complicated system the GI tract is.

Hi! Thanks for the encouragement! I feel that Heather's book has completely changed my life. Before
I started her diet, I was having weekly attacks, which seems to be connected to going into menopause
because before that I was getting one maybe once every 3 months or so. Don't really understand
the connection, but it was making it hard to work and definitely putting a cramp in my social life. Now, I've had 2 or 3 mornings where I had to take immodium to 'ward off' any problems and that was the end
of it!
I'm so grateful I stumbled upon this site-my freezer is always stockpiled with Heather's yummy
breads! I especially love the chocolate applesauce and the pumpkin apple spice breads. Happy
New Year to you and may you enjoy good health throughout 2004! Linda

Chocolate a no-no most of the time and yes I sometimes have trouble swallowing. Some foods bother me if they are to dry like chicken breast and some breads. If I eat them in small bite qty, it's quite tolerable. Reflux I use no meds but drink lots of chamomile before and after a meal, it's great and I don't get the reflux as often anymore. Don't overeat to, it can not only tigger the IBS, but reflux also. Eat small meals every 3-4hrs.

What a nice post, Linda! Your IBS started with menopause? Coincidentally? Interesting -- because it seemed mine began about the same time! (Although I had an operation.)

Chocolate applesauce? Sounds great! I made the Pumpkin Apple Spice Bread, and you're right -- it's excellent! I just made her Sticky Lemon Bread --- ooooh, baby!

Yes, here's to a good 2004 and a HEALTHY one -- for all of us!

Thanks, Linda,
Bev.

I can't do chamomile because of my ragweed allergies. So you can't have brownies or chocolate cake or anything with unsweetened chocolate?

Ruchie, THANK YOU!!! I don't feel my age -- I look in the mirror and can't believe it myself -- but I'm 59. I was born in 1944 on Guy Fawkes Day. I still ain't sure what that is -- but a Brit will know!

Yes, I started menopause 22 years ago when I had my operation. Thankfully that's all behind me now. If I could, I'd never go back -- I'm looking AHEAD!

Happy New Year!

Hi RUCHIE; I had an ulcer sime years ago and My doctor put me on a diet and the weight came off and my ulcer cleared up. I was skeptical as to if it would work or not, but diet really does play a key role in these things.

you cutie pie you!

This is actually from the First Year IBS, but I put it in the IBS Glossary on the site because it's a good reference for folks Questions and checklist for your doctor

BTW, I'd say that your expectations for your doc to simply listen to your questions and take the time to answer them is the LEAST you should expect.

Thank you SO MUCH for having me in your thoughts.....you're SO WONDERFUL!

I haven't ben back to the doc...he never called with my bloodwork...so I'm quite annoyed!

It seems like my reflux is still there...so I'm gonna continue with the aloe vera juice and cabbage juice until it's gone OR I see the doc and he tells me it's better/worse.

I've been eating to heal the ulcer AND get rid of yeast infection. This means a no-sugar (except minimal fruit...not even honey!) diet, lotsa rice, no bread/yeast, lotsa beans and veggies diet. (No tomatoes though...my fav!) It also means lotsa rest and lotsa RELAXING!

I'm actually enjoying all the restrictions...I just feel so HEALTHY! I feel so ALIVE and full of life...like my old self again. The tapes are PHENOMENAL...the plants are my oxygen...and last night my hubby and I went to an Asian store and bought 2 tea cups...one for each!

The things that have helped me through this are my hobbies and special little things I've "discovered" on my own....the plants, cross-stitch, my love of Asian culture, taking an active role in my health, and smiling a TON! And, of course, my hubby and the support of this board...and my biggest fan Bev! Btw, my hubby and I REALLY don't have money to spend...but I bought these things anyway. If I'm not happy and not feeling well......how can I work or take of my hubby...or myself?! To me, it was worth it...I'm worth it! (I'm not used to saying things like that...but I'm trying!)

Thanks for asking Bev...and for caring so much....you're such a special person!!!!! I wish you all the health and happiness in the world!

Love,
Ruchie
