Getting INsoluble Fiber Foods Too?

I was raised to believe that if you don't have green vegetables every day you'll die. Until recently, I lived by that rule. Ate a lot of broccoli and -- my favorite -- green salad with fresh peas and green beans and, yes, uncooked broccoli. YUM. Well, needless to say, I can't do that anymore. It's been a gradual "weaning" but lately I haven't had ANY insolubles, and something very strange happened. While I'm doing just fine, in fact I haven't had a cramp in a week, my hubbie is having problems! He's cramped up and can't poop. VERY unusual for him. He insists on eating everything I eat -- no matter what I have on my plate, he wants it. He couldn't even stand my having this new fennel tea; he had to have it too. So, okay, I gave him some of my tea -- he LOVES it!

But I digress. I just announced, enroute to the bathroom, "here comes poop number THREE of the morning!" while he looked at me with jealousy and said, "OHMYGOD -- wish it was me!" Obviously, I gotta get those insolubles back into our diet. Think I'm gonna give some of Mags' soup recipes a try, especially that cream of broccoli soup (with the leeks). That'll fix up my hubby! P.S.: So don't ferget those insolubles, guys! It's only fair.

Bev, you crack me up!! lol... Since I am a bit new to this IBS stuff, I am a little nervous about putting the insoluble stuff back in. My favorite is eating a big ol' salad with lots of green leafy stuff and tomatoes, onions, celery, peas and of course cheese. (Does Soy cheese tast the same as dairy cheese??????) I don't want to go into a major attack again. I am feeling bloated and gassy now and I didn't have that much to eat today.... Thanks for the reminder to keep eating the insolubles as well as the solubles.....

Too many people simply eliminate insoluble fiber foods from their diet completely. This is NOT healthy, for IBS or otherwise. The best way to learn your way around this is to scrutinize the recipes in Eating for IBS and on the website and Recipe Board. They'll give you great ideas for how to incorporate a wealth of fresh fruits, veggies, beans, nuts, and whole grains into a high soluble fiber basis.

Remember that anything that manually breaks down insoluble fiber before you eat it (cutting, chopping, pureeing, cooking - even thoroughly chewing!) will really minimize the risk to your IBS.

So make that veggie soup, and blend some fresh fruit into a smoothie to go with it, and puree some beans in to a dip for bread on the side!

Laurie, check out Heather's answer to my post, above. I know what you mean about being hesitant to add in the insoluble food -- BUT of course Heather's right. Besides the great recipes in Heather's "Eating for IBS," a lot of the recipes in the recipe section of this website sound incredibly good. I'm gonna make Mags' Lemon Chicken with White-Bean Puree, Laura's Cozy Veggie Vegetable Soup, Steather's Sweet & Sour Cabbage Soup, Mags' Broccoli Leek Soup, JoanMarie's Rosemary Turkey With Mushrooms, and Mags' Turkey and Roasted Red Pepper Pasta, just to name a few, and I already made JoanMarie's FANTASTIC Burgundy Chicken with Mushrooms. I've started a new 3-ring binder cookbook for all these recipes I printed off our website and labeled the binder, "Good Stuff to Eat!"

About that salad -- I know how you feel. There's a salad bar downtown that has THE BEST stuff. I love to go there and pile on the radicchio, fresh broccoli, peas -- oh, and they have THE best Honey Dijon dressing -- oh, BABY! Well, needless to say, I can barely make it home after only one serving (my husband has two)! I'm so doubled up with cramps and diarrhea -- really, is it worth it? I just don't think so. That bloating and gassy feeling you have right now? I'd blame the salad.

And soy cheese -- YES, it IS as good, although some are better than others. For example, the soy "Tofu Rella" brand mozzarella is FANTASTIC on pizza. The vegan "Soymage" brand American and cheddar cheeses (I tried to make a grilled "cheese" sandwich), not so much. So it's all a matter of personal taste.

Frankly, I think all this "discovery" is kinda fun. Why feel sorry for ourselves (lets face it -- we ain't terminal!) when we can shop around for different stuff we've never tried before and have taste tests! I LOVE taste tests. Look for my upcoming taste test on the infamous "Antidepressant Brownies" versus the "Nu-Pudge" variety! I won't disappoint! Bev

I am testimony to the fact that you shouldn't eliminate all insoluble fibre. i was eating so much fruit and veggies until I switched to a diet based entirely on soluble fibre which made my symptoms about 10 times worse! I rrad that mashing, pureeing and cooking veggies etc was the safets way of eating them and as I cant do this, i thought it was better to cut them out completely....BIG MISTAKE! once id learnt my lesson, i reintrouduced veggies into my diet, even if i have to buy the ones you microwave in a bag, its better than nothing. i feel so sorry for my body, this year I think Ive put it through more hell than its put me through! firstly from high protein -> high carboydrate -> and now to wheat/dairy free....hopefully ive now reached some kind of plateau where me and body will happily get along...fingers crossed!

Me too! I have a whole system! LOL

I print out any recipes I want to try, then they go into my Tigger folder. Tigger watches over them for me until I get to make them!

Then, once I make them, if I like them, they go into a page protecter and into the binder. That way if I spill anything on it - which I always do because I'm such a sloppy cook! LOL - I can just wipe it off. And, of course, if I don't like the recipe, it just gets tossed.

What's a "tigger folder"? Is that like a "tickler"? "Tigger watches over [you]"? EH? Is that like a kitchen witch?

Yeah, I put my recipes behind a celophane cover. Makes it so much easier to wipe off when your KITCHEN AID ( ) splatters. Sounds like I could use a kitchen witch too, don't it?!?

I hear you, katgirl. I still haven't added much insoluble fiber back into my diet, either, even though I know I need to! It's so hard to get yourself to eat something whenit has bothered you so much in the past, isn't it? Hopefully we can both take the plunge soon...

i AM GLAD you mentioned chewing thoroughly because I love apples straight. I always thought though that if you chew really good that it would be alright.

Louise, check out Karin's recipe for waffles on the recipe board dated 10/06/03. It sounds magnificent (only I'm substituting canned punkin for the banana and making them pancakes instead of waffles). YUM! Bev

Hi - This is going to vary a bit from person to person, but what will typically matter even more is how carefully you eat the insoluble fiber foods. Start off with totally blending the foods - fruit into smoothies, and cooked veggies into soups or pasta sauces. No matter what insoluble fiber foods you choose for this, if they're completely pureed they should be very safe - especially with a soluble fiber foundation.

When I make that smoothie, how 'bout if I throw in a little soy protein? GeniSoy is what I used to use in the days when I made smoothies with yogurt; the ingredients seem safe, but I'm checkin' with the pros first! Whatchathimk? Bev

No problem - I often do that. I make them with a little soy milk, too, so everything blends up easily.

Heather-just to let you know. I've been on your diet for two days, and I'm feeling much better already. I read what you said, but even though I love beans, they are really making me nervous. As long as I am stable, do they honestly not increase the diarrhea? And since my symptoms also include a lot of gas, do you suggest I take the Beano before trying any? Thanks so much! Amy

I would also like to know-where do tomatoes fall into this equation? You have recipes for salsa that call for raw tomatoes. But since I'm just starting out, shouldn't all the veggies be cooked? Is a simple cooked tomato sauce OK with past then-one that I could blend some veggies into?
