Peppermint caps anyone?

I started experimenting with Heather's peppermint caps for the second time a couple of days ago, and they seemed to be settling okay. Then overnight last night I woke up with a terrible stomach ache and acid reflux problems, and distinctly recognized the taste of the peppermint caps. I took some Tums and felt better, but I just don't think my stomach can handle the peppermint caps. I have two more full bottles in my room, though, and I don't want them to go to waste! Would anyone who uses them be interested in 2 free bottles of peppermint caps? I'd rather send them to one of you and have them get used! To make it fair I'll send them to whoever expresses a desire first. You can e-mail me your address at kmwahl@yahoo.com.

I am about halfway through my first bag of Acacia, and I don't think it works as well for me as Citrucel, so I think I'll be switching back when it's gone. It hasn't caused me problems, but I haven't been as stable while using it. If that makes sense!

Not sure what is causing my problems at the moment-I started tha acacia one week ago Sunday-eveything was good until Thursday than WHAM LOTS of really smelly, painful gas. I'm only taking 1 heaping spoon in the am and my fibercon pills in the pm. I have been SO bloated and stinky gassey since last Thursday. I didn't take the Acacia today to see if that helps. I don't remember eating anything "bad". Anyone experience this with the Acacia or do you guys thinks its a conciedence?

After reading Heather's book, I wanted to cry. Not that I'm an over eater, it's just all the "junk food" that I love I had to give it, I was a donut, cookies, cakes, danish person. I read the book and I have had IBS diagnoses for almost 25 years. Yes, 25 years, I promised my Mom I would follow her advise for 4 weeks and I did, I'm now in my fifth week. In the 4 1/2 weeks I've been following the diet, I have had 3 episodes, I'm a diarrhea, cramping, labor pain IBSer, which I usually would have 4-5 in a week. That was wonderful. However I did not know how much Citracel, which is my choice of soluble fiber to take, I should be taking, I did read on her web site. I have only been taking one in the evening, how should I increase this without hurting myself. Also, when you have an attack, do you still continue taking your soluble fiber supplement and eat the "easy" list foods? I had a sever attack last night and my colon is still in quite a bit of pain this morning and I'm afraid to eat or take my fiber, any suggestions. Please e-mail me privately. Thanks

Michele, I have stinky gas all the time -- and I haven't even started the acacia yet! I don't think that's to blame. Have you tried the fennel tea? I just started it the other day, and I'm hopeful it will take care of my bloating and gas. There's a whole string of posts about it here -- check it out! (Meanwhile, if you have to blow, just step outside on the balcony and let go!) Bev

Hi and welcome!

You said you wanted a private email, but you didn't leave an email address, so I thought I'd just answer you here. If you want to email me, feel free: mags2003m@hotmail.com.

Go ahead and take your soluble fiber supplement. This will help you recover faster.

It sounds like you are taking the pill form of Citrucel. I don't remember how many grams of fiber are in each. You should be able to take 1 in the am, 1 in the pm at least.

Anyone else using the Citrucel pills know this?

Hope you are feeling better soon. Make yourself some strong peppermint tea. It should help make you feel better.

In answer to Mags' question: I've been taking Citrucel for several years now. It hasn't done anything for me. No wonder -- while it touts itself as "daily source of 100% soluble fiber" each capsule contains only 500mg. fiber, and taking 2 a day is nothing. Heather suggested I double the dose -- at least -- which I did, and I noticed no difference. Now I'm on acacia.

I hope that answers your question. I forgot what it was. Damn it's hell getting old.

Bev.

That is nothing! Yeah - you need to take more. I was taking the powder form, 2 T in the am, 2 T in the PM. I think that's about 3 grams each time. I did start off slow when I first started taking it, 1 tsp each time, to 2 tsp, etc.

I'm still trying to track all the feedback from Acacia. So far it's been overwhelmingly favorable, but I had to figure there would always be exceptions (why is IBS always like that?!) I'm curious if you were up at 3T a day if the results would be the same. (I feel like I'm asking you to be a guinea pig )

Everything in my store is totally guaranteed, so please don't feel that you're stuck with the caps if you're unhappy with them. No need for that!

I am learning from the boards that people have really varying reactions to the caps depending on when they take them. Everyone with reflux issues seems to have the best results when they take them on a totally empty stomach, a good hour or two before they eat. Other folks have better results when they take a cap right before or with a meal. I don't know why there is such variation here - if it's just an IBS thing or a peppermint cap thing.

Hope you're feeling better soon.

I'm at 1 T in the am, and 1 T in the pm. That was about equivalent to the amount of grams of Citrucel I was taking (I'd been taling 2 T of Citrucel in the am, and again in the pm) Should I just start right at an extra 1 T with lunch, or should I build up to it? What do you think? Or, of course, I guess I could do 1.5 T in the am, and again in the pm?

Let me know...I'm willing to guinea pig for ya!

bevrs - same as u, stinky gas (not exactly the best way to introduce yourself to new Uni mates! my solution is to keep moving, that way no-one suspects you!) I have found the fennel beneficial for both bloating and gas, especially the bloating - dont know if that affects you also? I started taking the acacia over a month ago now...i think at first it made the gas and bloating worse (as heather said it might), but after a few weeks, it really starts to help...i know that for some people it hasn't been that good for them, but i would recommend it

Yeah, try the extra tablespoon at lunch. If that goes okay for several days, you can always add on that tablespoon to your morning or pm dose, so you don't have to hassle with 3 doses a day.

Well I don't believe the Acacia is causing this episode of stinkiness! I skipped my dose of it yesterday am and have had 4 attacks of D today-I did take my dose of acacia today and am hoping that since everything in my body decided to do a mass exit today, I will be rid of this week long stinkiness! My poor hubby has given me the new pet name of stinky butt! Good thing he has a good sense of humor and not so good sense of smell due to chronic allergies!

My husband has diverticulitis and takes Fibercon, which I used to take, but it did terrible things to me, anyway, I noticed that the wal-mart/sam's club brand lists Acacia as an ingredient, I didn't know if anyone was aware of that.

I've been taking Acacia for a month now. I take 1 tsp.
a day. I've been taking it before I eat. I was also
on cholestramine and I found myself getting very constipated so I decided since my insurance company
doesn't want to pay for the cholestamine that I'd ease
off of it and just use the acacia. I was taking acacia
every other day with the cholestramine every other day.
Then I went to taking Chlestramine every 3 days and then
I stopped taking it for 11 days. I took acacia 1tsp. every
day. I was doing okay except for occasional bouts of
constipation. Which is highly unusual for me. Then all of
a sudden three days ago I got terrible pains in my bowel,
back, etc. (I swear it felt just like labor pains). After
two days of that I took my cholestramine and a couple hours
later I had the pain but I was able to release it by going
to the bathroom 5 times. Now I feel bla and sore and I'm
thinking I will continue with the acacia and take the
Cholestramine maybe every 4 or 5 days. I know the dose
of acacia that I'm taking sounds small, but the cholestramine I take is 1/8 of a tsp.. I just don't need
much medicine. All the medications I take are in tiny
doses. If I take more they knock me out or cause problems.
So any idea what caused this bout of terrible pain? I
had no idea what to do about it except suffer and sleep.
Any ideas anyone? Does anyone else feel like they are
in labor when they get this? I hope this wasn't to
confusing to understand.

Hi there - Acacia and cholestyramine are not interchangeable. Cholestyramine is a prescription drug that binds bile acids to prevent them from irritating the intestines. It's usually given to people who have had their gallbladders removed. I would definitely talk to your doc about this med, tell him you stopped taking it, and about the sudden pain you had.

You can take both cholestyramine and acacia - they won't interact negatively, and they do totally different things in your gut.

Best,
Heather

I was taking the caplets, and they're only 500mg. each. The powder packets have a lot more fiber!

Heather recommends, "For the powders (Acacia, Citrucel . . . [etc.], start at 1 teaspoon twice a day, working up to 2 tablespoons twice a day, or the equivalent of 10-12 grams of soluble fiber per day." See her section on supplements in this website.

I just started the acacia yesterday; I had tried doubling-up on my dosage of the Citrucel capsules but noticed no difference. I'm sure the acacia will do the trick; I started at the dosage Heather recommends and will gradually increase it as she suggests. The woman knows her stuff; I don't think we'll let her move to England, eh? Bev

Thank you Heather for the very good information.

I think I will cut back on the cholestramine but
not stop taking it. It's such a nuisance to take
but now I can see that I need to talk to a doctor
and not just stop taking it completely.

Thanks Again!

Hi Bev, it depends when he gets a bad attack of his diverticulitis, it is pretty severe and they usually put him on Flagyl and Levaquin and he ususally has diarrhea the entire time and a fever and has to miss work, last time they gave him Augmentin XL, which just about killed him, after two days he quit taking it, one of the worst side effects from it is Diarrhea.....duh, he fortunate he doesn't like nuts, seeds, and the stuff that you are supposed to stay away from. Hope this helps Cheyrl

Thanks, Ruchie! I just hate to see things go to waste.

It's funny, peppermint tea doesn't bother me at all. Granted, I just drink Celestial Seasonings tea, not Heather's, so it doesn't have nearly as much peppermint oil in it. But I actually never even had problems with acid reflux before, the caps just really brought it on. Weird, huh? I guess I'm not the only one who's bothered by them, though.

I am having a great weekend, and I hope you are too!

I'm the same way. Never had reflux until I started on these pep caps, in fact didn't have it when I was on another brand. I'm going to take the 2 different brands and cut into to see just how thick the enteric coating is. That may be were the problem lays. Then I will also test the 2 on myself again and see if I can take one and not the other or is it just that they are both going against me now. I'll let everyone know.

Melissa, how did the 3 Tablespoons of Acacia sit with you? I'm up to 2 T also, and also not having the results, just like you. Did you go up to 3 T and did it help? If not, what is your solution? Did you switch back or what dose Acacia finally worked?

Thanks!

Believe it or not, I only take about 2 tsp in my cereal every day. I do add Acacia to my baked goods, so I don't have an accurate count of how much I eat per day, but I seriously doubt it's much more. I add about 1 T to a bread or so, so if I'm only eating a piece, I'm sure the amount I'm getting is very little from baked goods.

Don't know if that helps or not....

what did happen when you went to 3 T? How did you decide to go down so drastically? I'm confused.

Maybe I should try dropping my dosage intead of trying to go higher.

You know what...I'm confused too!

I remember I'd stopped using acacia, because I liked the Citrucel much better. I just started trying acacia....it had to be about a year ago? Maybe a little more. OK, when I moved where I live now in July 04, I was still using Citrucel. I know by Jan/Feb of this year I was definitley back on acacia.

Anyway, when I tried it again, I think I just started out at a lower dose. I was taking 1/2 tsp in the am. And I think 1/2 tsp in the pm. But, it was such a pain in the pm. I hate trying to mix it with a drink. It always clumps. So, it's just much easier to mix with my cereal. So, that's probably why I just put the whole 1 tsp in the morning.

Whenever I've tried to go higher, I feel the creepy crawly feeling. So I finally decided that if I feel ok at this low dose, I'm sticking here. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I just posted that I'm confused what I am. But, I think I'm now an A. I used to be a D, but haven't had D from IBS in I don't know how long. I do have trouble going sometimes, but it's usually if my regular daily schedule is thrown off.

What dose are you at? You are C, right?

I started over and only went as high as I felt ok on. That first time on acacia I felt uneasy. I think I was taking too much.

Hi all,
I've been absent for awhile. I have been getting better. Lately stress has triggered the IBS attack again.Has anyone experienced lightheadedness and shortness of breath as symptoms before having a BM? Seems to be a new symptom with me as well as an anxiety.

I have also experinced tingling of the skin and loss of focus. This usually scares the hell out of me then all of a sudden bathroom time and I feel a little better. I've had all the tests and the ticker seems ok.
