I was at a local book store one day looking for IBS cookbooks and ran accross only one book! Heather's of course. I bought it, and read the entire thing. It was inspiring and motivating. I decided that in order to minimize my abdominal pain I would try not eating meat, and cutting down on dairy like Heather suggested in her book. Well, I did, and I've never felt better! I completely cut out all red meat, and I actually don't even crave it anymore. It was the best decision I've ever made reguarding IBS. Thanks a million Heather Van Vorous!

Hi Pringles! Red meat is such a no-no; I gave it up a long time ago and don't miss it at all -- except occasionally for a quarter-pounder with cheese. But can you imagine what that would do to me? WOW, it ain't worth it!!! I too gave up the dairy -- ALL dairy -- because it did such a number on me. I did everything Heather recommended except for the coffee, which I finally gave up 2 days ago. It wasn't easy, but I feel better already so I know it was the right thing to do. Amazing how right she was in that book! You might try her other book, "Eating for IBS." (I'm assuming the book you bought was "IBS, The First Year"?) The cookbook has some fantastic recipes in it, like her pizza, chocolate applesauce cake, pumpkin apple spice bread, breakfast rice pudding, gingerbread and incredible "Brer Rabbit Carrot Cake" (which I thought was so good it didn't need the icing). By the way, if you ever do crave hamburgers like I still do, give Boca Burgers a try. They're really surprisingly good. Cheers! Bev.

Pringles: Good for you! I've cut out red meat (except for the rare treat), all dairy (use soy milk and rice cheese products. caffeine and pop. I feel better than I have in years! My wish for you is that you do too!!! Maryh

Hi Maryh -- I gave up meat over 20 years ago and was told that I would never again be able to digest it, that the body loses the ability to do so. While I don't miss it, I do miss the occasional hamburger, and, while Boca burgers are a good substitute, it still ain't the real thing, ya know? So my question is this: you say you still have a "rare treat"? IS it a treat? Are you still able to digest it? You haven't "lost your ability to do so"? I'm just curious, that's all; I don't have the GUTTS (ouch) to drive down to MacDonald's and order a Big Mac (Quarter Pounder)? Thanks, Bev.

About 1x a year I actually hit the McDonald's drive thru for a happy meal. I actually plan out this event days in advance so I know that I can be close to my home bathroom over the next day or so if I need to be. I also don't ever do this on an empty stomach and I eat lots of bread to try to buffer out the attack on my stomach. I know Heather is reading this and maybe cringing! But eating a happy meal 1x a year keeps me sane and most of the time I just end up very very gassy afterwords. I do not recommend it! But I'm sure we all indulge now and then.

Hi Debby, I gave up red meat over 20 years ago, and I was told that once you give it up your body loses its ability to digest it -- something to do with the acid in it or something? -- at any rate, maybe it's true? I don't miss the red meat except whenever McDonald's flashes a picture of a quarter-pounder with cheese on the TV. Fortunately, a Boca Burger satisfies me. You can find them in any supermarket in the freezer section. Just pile on the soy cheese, "lettuce, pickle, onion on a sesame seed bun!" Try it -- it ain't bad at all! Bev. P.S.: No, I haven't "indulged" in any red meat in over 20 years; I'm too scared.

make sure to get the vegetarian version, because the others sneak cheese in there!
There is also a brand called Morningstar Farms Better'N Burgers. Personally, I like the flavor of these better than Boca. But, that's just me!
