I am new at this and have read through everything I could find on the site. I am so glad to have found this and I am looking forward to Heather's Aracia and the book. Does anyone have suggestions on what to do for holiday parties, potlucks and eating out? What foods are safest to eat when you don't know how they are prepared? Also, are any sweets safe when they are store bought?

You should purchase "Eating for IBS...recipes..." or "IBS: The First Year" by Heathe Van Vorous... they answer all of your questions and more!

Angel food cake is usually a safe store bought treat... just add some light cool whip (non-dairy) and chopped strawberries.

Safe foods include anything low in fat and with out dairy... especially soluble fibers, such as french bread or pretzels.

Hi, Marinana! Potlucks are always safe because you can always eat just what you bring, nothing else. I never eat anything at a party because I don't want to ask what's in it. I fill up on ice water only. It's just safer, easier, and no one notices as long as I have something in my hand. Eating out isn't so tough because there's so much I don't like, such as Chinese food or Mexican food, and I wouldn't go near Italian! I usually try to order fresh fish with rice, and I eat the rice first (soluble fiber ya know!), or I feel pretty safe with chicken. One thing I do is I always split my meal in half; my husband takes one half, I take the other -- we never order two separate meals. I never order dessert, and I drink a lot of water. Oh, and I eat the bread -- as long as it's white -- and without butter. It's not difficult, maybe a little boring, but I'm enjoying myself and feeling very virtuous inside. More importantly, I leave with a happy tummy. You can do it!
Bev.

Angel food is great for store bought, but try testing yourself with cool whip at home where you're safe if you don't do well with it...not at a social function. Some people can't handle cool whip at all, even though it's non-dairy. If you find you do well with it, THEN try it out in public!

HIP WHIP!! It is better than cool whip... it tastes really creamy and is super fluffy. It is made out of tofu, evaporated cane juice, bits of fruit juices, and other super natural, easy to digest ingredients. You can buy at any co-op or health food store, like Whole Foods. I first bought it just b/c of the name... I thought it was so hilarious! Just wait until you see the other funny messages on the container! N E WHO, turns out it is really yummy...

Shanna,
Thanks for your wealth of knowledge on recipes and products. I appreciate you guys letting us know about these so I can go to the coop here and look for them. Finding a substitute for whip cream is great!

Sounds yummy! I'm on my way to Whole Foods tomorrow, so I'll see if I can find it.

It is in the freezer section. Upon purchasing, allow it to thaw in your fridge for four hours. It doesn't last as long as cool whip, however... because it is actually food and not made of a lot of weird ingredients to make it last forerver! LOL.

No Prob!

Thanks for all of your contributions to the board, too.

I love that we can all help each other -- and be helped. It's just so much fun... and they way the world should be, right?

Best Wishes,
Shanna

I've tried hip whip and personally I didn't like it-but everyone is individual!!!! It's in the frozen foods with vegetarian foods. I use light cool whip with no problems! Maryh
