I'm getting ready to go on a cruise in two weeks, so I'm trying to cover all my bases to ensure that I'll get through all security checkpoints with two containers full of white powder....

I spoke with an agent at TSA (Transportation Security Administration), which is responsible for all domestic security at US airports. They have no problem with any quantity of dry foods, nor did they have an issue with me bringing on two containers of white powder (acacia and natural calm). They said the substances didn't even need to be in their original containers! Cool! However, she did recommend removing the containers from my carry-on and specifically presenting them to the security screeners.

However, I'll also need to deal with Customs and/or the cruise line security. I spoke with the ship's coordinator for my cruise about everything I want to bring onboard. CUSTOMS IS DIFFERENT THAN STANDARD AIRPORT SECURITY! She told me that the white powders MUST be in their original containers. I told her that I also plan to bring a small soft-sided cooler of Bio-K bottles in my checked bag (the 3.5-oz bottles are larger than the allowed 3-oz quantity). She said they do not allow coolers onboard, but that if I get a letter from my doctor (on professional letterhead) specifically stating all the items I need to bring, I won't have any problems.

Glad I called!!

I had planned on only taking enough acacia and natural calm for the week, but now I have to take BOTH (rather large) containers in my carry-on. HEATHER - what are the chances of making a smaller container of acacia, for traveling purposes? I would think this would be useful for anyone traveling internationally, on a cruise, or even domestically; especially with the increased security we have these days. I know I would buy one!

Anyway, I'm sure my doctor won't have any problem helping me out with this; I'm going to talk it over with her this afternoon. Just thought I would pass this info along for any frequent travelers out there!

Cool info, thanks!

And I agree, I'd buy travel size acacia too! I fly to Europe all the time

I would also love some travel-size acacia. Especially if the container was durable and refillable.

I completely agree! I have to fill a small bag with Acacia every weekend and a measuring spoon--I feel so lame when I have to bust it out in the middle of the restaurant! Plus some Acacia tablets would be sooooo helpful.

Oh yes please - I'd like to place an advance order for Acacia tablets!! As far as I know, soluble fibre tablets of any description are not available OTC in the UK - and I'd only use Acacia, because it's safe for me.

I am good with 4 and a half tbsp daily, but life would be so much easier if I could carry tablets with me so that I don't miss one of my doses. Plus I could split doses even more and take one at lunch - I just haven't been brave enough to do the white powder thing in a crowded staffroom full of people who think my eating habits are strange, anyway!

In the meantime, if you wanted, you could put some in a bottle of water ahead of time, and drink it with lunch...no one would ever know!

Just a note if you do decided to try this...from personal experience, I've learned to sip some water before adding the acacia to the bottle to make some room, then just funnel in and shake.

We're working on travel size packets (like sugar packets) - that's coming pretty soon. The chewable tablets are proving difficult - we're still working on them, but the packets will be out sooner.

Best,

I tote around so much stuff with me when I travel for diet purposes. People always give me that "Whaaaaaa?" look. Not that I care much about what other people think of me, but a little less bulk to travel with will be much appreciated.

Thanks Melissa - I didn't think of that, even though I take bottled water to work!

Jeio - I just followed the instructions on the Acacia tub for C, which recommends a gradual increase to the max dose of about 5 level tbsp per day. Believe me, I so need it!

I went to Mexico in November and put some acacia in a tupperware container and put it in my checked luggage. Customs was no issue.

There's no way I'm putting my acacia in my checked bag, in the off chance it gets lost!! It's going in my carry-on!!

Also, when you travel without checked baggage (business trips and such), you can't really take acacia with you, unless you insist on bringing the white powder thing on the plane... I didn't dare, I was in a hurry anyway, to go through that hassle at security, and almost destabilized last month, when I went to WA for a week.

Actually, you can. Like I said in my original post, TSA didn't have a problem with the Acacia; it's the international travel that was going to be the issue. Just get a note from your doctor that you can keep with you whenever you travel, stating what it is and that it's for a "medical condition." By law, you don't have to tell anyone what the medical condition is.

Well, I take 1 tsp per dose, so that would be ideal for me.

There are some folks taking less, but if you reduce to 1/2 tsp that would make the folks taking in the tablespoons much worse off. It's a tradeoff and the question is only how many people would be made worse of and by how much by each solution (I don't just mean 1t and 1/2t). But you probably know all this

Thanks a lot for doing that!

I think that seems like the most logical breakdown for people to adjust to personal needs. For example, I take 1 Tablespoon every morning, so I could just take 3 packets. If someone only took 1/2 tsp, they could just take 1/2 a packet. Guesstimating on just taking a 1/2 packet to be 1/2 tsp shouldn't throw someone off too much, do you think? I know some people were having some trouble in the beginning with not using a level tsp/Tbsp for their dose.

Also, thanks for everything you do for us. You're the best!

I usually would take 1-3tsp per dose, so if I was away for a weekend or something then taking a bunch of 1tsp packets would be great.

Thanks so much, can't wait for these!

For me I only talke 1/2 teaspoon twice a day..So a packet wouldn't work for me, I am tired of carrying my little tuperware in my purse.

I think it was sugar packets I've seen before that have kinda two compartments in one packet. For those who take 1tsp just rip the whole packet open. For those who take 1/2tsp just peel open one compartment. I hope you can visualize what I'm thinking about, I can't seem to find a picture online.

I am too excited about this. I travel twice a month to Phoenix and I am there all weekend. This will be an awesome help for folks. Plus I don't have to worry about the TSA throwing it away-! THANK YOU HEATHER!! By the way, my vote is for 1 tsp. Makes sense to have it in that measurement

So glad you're working on this Heather! Thank you SO MUCH for everything. I started your diet last July, and I feel better now than I have in YEARS! All because of you.

Me too. Seems the most adaptable measurement. Unless you produced a choice of packets containing either half a tsp or 1 tsp...but that might prove too costly.

I really hope to see 1/2 teaspoon packets as then one could add to it.If not those on 1/2 would have a mess to deal with...
