Ketchup and diarrhea

Good Morning,

The last two times I had a grilled chicken sandwich at a restaurant, I've used generous helpings of ketchup to help spice it up. Both times I've had diarrhea. There were no garnishes in the sandwich, just chicken, ketchup and bread.
Has anyone else had trouble with ketchup and have any insights on why this is happening?

Hi Alicia,

Sorry you are having trouble, but sometimes I have trouble eating out at all. You never quite know what they use in the kitchen. It might not be the ketchup. Even though the chicken is grilled they may not be grilling it absolutely plain (no oil, etc.), or they may be grilling it in an area where something else was grilled (maybe a hamburger) and it picks up the residue. Try grilling the chicken at home and using ketchup and see if that's it. Good luck.

It could be that you're using too much ketchup. Tomatoes are so acidic that cooked sauces are often a problem - ketchup is okay for me because I have such relatively small quantities. Try a little at home on something you know for sure is safe.

some brands of ketchup are sweetened with high fructose corn syrup. If you're fructose intolerant (and many folks with IBS are) that can cause cramps, gas, and diarrhea. Try a health food store version of ketchup at home and see how you do with it. Or try mustard or fat free mayo instead.

Heinz actually makes an organic ketchup now. It's really good and doesn't have any high-fructose corn syrup. I even found it at my regular Safeway!
